This Ground-finch is one o f the many Mexican species in the Berlin Museum named but
never described by the late Professor Lichtenstein. Although discovered probably some thirty
or forty years ago, it was not characterized until 1851, when Dr. Cabanis gave a short
description o f it in a foot-note to the first volume o f his “ Museum Heineanum from a
specimen stated to have been obtained at Eeal-Arriba in Central Mexico, and placed it in tbe
genus Atlapetes. It is very difficult to define the exact limits between tlie neariy allied iorms
o f Ground-finches denominated Atlapetes, Pyrgisoma, P ip ilo and Gkamoeosptza, but it seems
better to associate the present species with Pyrgisoma hiarcuatum, as subsequently suggestec }

We have not seen specimens o f Professor Bafrd’s Pyrgisoma xanthusi lately described by
Mr. Lawrence from examples obtained by Xantbus in the plains o f Colima m Western Mexico,
but have little doubt, that it must be referred to P . nibricatum, the more so as üie author
appears to have altogether overlooked Dr. Cabanis’ description o f tbe latter. ^ The only specie.'
o f Pyrgisoma at all rcsemhling the present bird in colouring is the trac P . kieneri of Bonaparte,
o f which we propose to g iv e a figure in our next number. But it should be recollected that, as
we have already shewn f , there has been a series o f eri-ors respectmg this latter bird, and that
the species called P . kieneri by Mr. Lawrence is our P . cahanisi.
During his recent travels in Southern Mexico M. Adolphe Boucard obtained specimens o
P. rubricatum at Atlisco in the highlands o f the State o f La Puebla. A pair o f these are now
Salvin and Godman’s collection, from the male o f which our figure has heen taken.
