While the northern and Antillean speeies o f tliis group are specially restricted in their
geographical areas, the present birtl appears to have a wide range In South America, where it
we exclude the abeiTant IMogonys Imcotis o f Tschudi, it is the only representatiTO of the
, ™ . Mr. Sclater first met with examples o f the present bird in the Museum of tho Jardm
des Plantes, to which establishment they had heen transmitted by M. Levraud from Caraocas,
■ and, not being aware o f its identity wdth Tsehudi’s and d'Orbigny's species deseribed it as new
from M. Levraud’s specimens. Subsequent examination o f tbe type of d Orbigiiy s Musctpeiu
ralhides, in the same collection, has convinced him o f the identity of the Venezuelan and
Bolivian bird, and though it is not v e iy easy to make out Tsclmdi’s description o f his
griseiventer (which has evidently been taken from a young bird), it is more than probable that
this is also a synonym o f the present species. .
Assmniiio- this view to he correct, the present Solitaire may probably occur in smtahle
localities throughout the eastern slopes o f the Andes, from the neighbourhood o f Caraceas to
the vallies o f Yungas in Bolivia. It is not mifi-cquently to be met with m Bogota eolleotions.
Mr. Fraser shot specimens o f it at Pallatanga in Ecuador, in Novembeiq 18o8. Tschudi p v e s
as its locality the outskirts o f the eastern wood-region of Peru. D Orblgny met wit i a sin^ e
specimen in the environs o f Chulumani, in the province of YRmgas in Bolivia.
