l a the year 1856 Sclater described a species o f Geotrygon, wbicb fonned part o f a
small collection o f birds made by the late Mr. Bridges, iu the vicinity of the town o f David,
in Chiriqixi, and subsequently recognized the same bird in one o f M. Salle’s collections from
S. Mexico.
Both o f these specimens were unfortunately lost sight of, and when the bird was afterwards
obtained in Guatemala by Salvin, the name alhifacies, taken from î l r . G. H. Gray’s MS.
in the British Museum, Avas applied to it. Other elements o f confusion were introduced into
the nomenclature o f this species by Sclater having described in the “ Proceedings” o f tlie
Zoological Society for Leptoptila under the name Geotrygon alhifacies, by
Prince Bonaparte having, in one o f his fugitive papers, published in the “ Comptes Rendus,”
miswi-itteu Mr. Gray’s manuscript name o f the present bird “ alhifrons.”
We trust that the accompanying figm-c o f this well-marked species will pi-event further
errors on the subject.
Geotrygon chiriquensis appears to be widely distributed throughout Central America,
from Chiriqui to Jalapa in Mexico. We have already mentioned the authorities for its
occm-rence at these extreme limits o f its range, as at present known to us. In Guatemala, Messrs.
Salvin and Godman met with it abundantly in the forests o f the eastern slope o f the Volcan
de Fuego, at an elevation o f from 6000 to 7000 feet, though it is also occasionally met Avith
