flower, ahandsome genus of tuberous- rooted plants.
T h e y succeed well when grown in a mixture of
sandy peat and light loam, with the pots well
drained, and treated as follows:—As soon as the
leaves die down, remove the plants to a cooler
house, wher e they should be kept dry for three or
four months; then they must be repotted, and
placed in a brisk moist heat; and when growing
f r e e l y , liberally supplied with water. They are
easily increased by dividing the roots, which should
be done at the time of potting. Synonymes: 1. B.

Akee Tree, and is a plant much esteemed in Africa
and the W. Indies on account of its frui t , which is
as large as a goose's egg, and of a reddi sh, or yellow
colour; the aril is eatable, of a sub-acid flavour,
and considered very grateful, particularly in the
W . Indies. It grows in loam and peat ; and cuttings,
w i t h the leaves not taken off, root in sand, under a
glass.
