Some of the species of this genus are well
w o r t h cultivatins; in the flower border for the
b e a u t y of their flowers. They are of the easiest
c u l t u r e in any common garden soil. The perennial
k i n d s may be readily increased by dividing- the
root or by seeds. The seeds of the annual kinds
only require to b e sown in t h e open border in spring.
V. sativa and its var iet ies a r e extensivel y cultivated,
a n d well known by the common name of vetch or
t a r e s ; they are used as food for all kinds of cattle,
a n d are allowed to be mor e nut r i t ive and profitable

g e n u s deserve to b e cul t iva t ed, e i ther for the beauty
o r the scent of thei r flowers. The hardy perennial
k i n d s are well fitted for ornament ing the front of
flower-borders or r o c k -wo r k , but the smal ler species
succeed best when grown in pots, in a mixture of
loam, peat, and sand. The species, natives of
A m e r i c a , thrive best in vegetable mould or peat,
a n d arc readi l y increased by parting the roots, or
b y seeds. The greenhouse and stove species should
b e g rown in a mixtur e of loam and peat; the her-

baceous kinds of them are increased by seed, or
d i v i d i n g the roots, and the shrubby kinds by cutt
i n g s , which root readily when planted under a
glass. The annual species may be sown in the open
b o r d e r s or on rock-work. The Neapolitan violet,
V. odor at a pallido-plena, may be made to flovyer
t h r o u g h o u t the winter and early spring, by placing
i t in a stove or warm pit. V. canina is said to be a
famous agent in removing cutaneous diseases.
