SAXIFRAOA, Linn. From saxum, a stone, Q.nd frango,
to b r e a k ; its reputed medical qualities in that disease.

v e r y extensive genus of beaut i ful alpine plants, the
g r e a t e r part of which are particularl y suitable for
o r n a m e n t i n g rock-work, or for growing on the sides
of naked banks. A light sandy soil is best for them ;
and they are all readily increased by seeds or divisions.
Many of the more rare and tender kinds
r e q u i r e the protection of a frame in winter, and
should therefore be grown in pots. Synonymes : 1.

This is a genus ot extremely beautitul
and showy annuals. A light fresh soil, not too
r i c h , appears to suit these plants best. They succeed
well if the seed be sown m an open border
e a r l y in spr ing; they may also be reared on a hotbed
in spring, planting a portion in the open
border, and growing the remainder in pots in tiie
greenhouse, with a f ree admission of air and Jight.
T o procure flowering plants early in summer, the
seed should be sown in pots during the autumn,
and the plants kept in a frame or greenhouse
t h r o u g h o u t the winter.
