Capiilijerie. Al l the species of this very important
genus have a highly ornamental appea rance, either
on tlfe lawn or in the for e s t ; the wood is also much
superior to that of any other t ree, teak alone
excepted, for the purpose of nava l a r chi t e c tur e ;
indeed, there is no purpose in the a r t s to which the
wood of the oak is not applicable. Q. Suber is very
valuable on account of its being the only tree vt'hich
produces in any quant i ty that ve ry impor tant
arti'cle, cork. T h e ba rk, l e ave s , and f rui t , of all
the species abound in as t r ingent ma t t e r , and in
tannin. T h e oalt succeeds best in a deep loamy
soil, and in a somewhat low s i tuat ion. T h e species
are general ly increased f rom s e e d ; and it is only
when par t icular var iet ies a r e to be perpetua ted,
tha t g r a f t ing is resorted to. T h e seeds ma y either
be sown when they drop f rom the t ree, or they
ma y be thoroughly dr ied, and preserved till the
fol lowing Ma r c h ; previous to sowing, the soil
should be wel l prepared, and af ter the drills are
opened, or the ear th drawn off the beds , the acorns
may be scat tered along the drills or over the beds ,
ke eping them about two inches a p a r t ; before
cover ing, the acorns mus t , if sown in beds, be
pat ted down wi th the back of a spade, or the back
of a wooden headed r a k e if sown in drills. The y
should be covered f rom hal f an inch, to an inch and
a hal f deep, according to the size of the acorn, wi th
finely broken soil. T h e af ter cul ture of the oak

Many of the plant s belonging to this extens ive
genus are well worth the cul t ivator ' s c a r e , and
they have long been f avour i t e s wi th the florist.
T h e aquat ic kinds requi re to be grown in wa t e r .
T h e grumose- rooted species will thr ive in any
common soil, and in any s i tua t ion; they are increased
by offsets f rom the roots, or by seeds . R.
asiaticiis and its va r iet ies should be grown in good
f resh loam and well-rot ted c ow-dung ; the tuber s
should be planted in October or Ma r ch ; if in the
former month, they will requi re to be s l ight ly protected
in bad weather . Se eds selected from the
best semi -double va r i e t i e s , sown early in October,
and kept growing dur ing the winter, will flower
the next season ; these latt?îr may also be increased
by dividing the roots. The s e plant s are mostly
