collector of the botanical notes made during that

r e s e a r c h . Linn. 5, Or . 1, N a t . Or. Solanacece. This
is a splendi d genus of plants ; the fol iage being very
fine, and the flowers large, like those of the Brugmansia.
The best way to induce them to flower is
to g row them in two parts turfy loam, and .one of
p e a t , liberally applying heat and water till they
h a v e perfected a good growth; then gradually
w i t h h o l d water until the leaves drop off from
d r o u g h t , and they will flower profusely. Cuttings,
p l a n t e d in mould or tan, will root without any
d i f f i c u l t y . Those taken from the flowering shoots
a r e more likely to produce flowers while small. '

So/or t o comfort, refer r ing to its soothing narcotic
effects. Linn. 5, Or. 1, Nat. Or. Solanacecs. All
t h e more showy species of this extensive genus
t h r i v e best in a light, rich soil, and are readi l y inc
r e a s e d by seeds, or by cuttings, in sand, unde r a
glass. A g r e a t n umb e r of t h em a r e highl y deserving
of cultivation, on account of their ornamental app
e a r a n c e . The seeds of the tender annual species
should be raised on a hotbed, and planted out in the
open ground about the end of May in a sheltered,
d r y situation. S. tuberosum is that wel l-known and
i n v a l u a b l e root, the potato, which, in a state of
p u t r e f a c t i o n , is said to give out a most vivid light,
sufficient to read by. This was particularly rem
a r k e d by an officer on guard at Strasburg, who
t h o u g h t the barracks were on fire, in consequence
of the l ight thus emi t ted f rom a cel lar ful l of potatoes.
S. nigrum and some others are highly virulent
poisons. S. Dulcamara is a ver y dangerous plant;
w h e n first bruised or chewed it is bitter, which
q u i c k l y gives place to a considerable degree of
sweetness, hence its name Dulcamara or Bittersweet.
The berries may be readily taken for
c u r r a n t s by children; they excite vomiting and
c a t h a r s i s . Floyer states that thirt y of them^ killed
a dog i n less t h a n three hour s , r ema ining undigested
i n the stomach. Synonymes : 1. Nycterium amazonium.
