r e q u i r i n g to be grown in a rather sheltered dry
s i t u a t i o n ; and cuttings of the ripened wood root
rea'dily, if planted in spring. R. officinalis is the
h e r b employed in the manufacture of Hungary
w a t e r ; tea made from it is also considered very
benehcial to persons troubled wi t h nervous headach,
and it is one of the most powerful preparations for
s t i m u l a t i n g and strengthening the nervous system.

A n extensive and interesting genus of plants. The
shrubby kinds of Bramble f^rowbest in a r ich loam ;
and are readily increased by sucker s from the root,
or by cuttings. The herbaceous species thrive
best in peat soil, and are likewise propagated by
suckers. The well known and much esteemed
R a s p b e r r y is t h e f r u i t of Rubus Idmus imdi its garden
v a r i e t i e s The f rui t of R. Chammmorus is acid, and
pleasant to the taste. It is known by the name
of Cloudberry, from the plants being found i n high
s i t u a t i o n s . The Scottish Highlanders and Lapl
a n d e r s esteem it one of their most grateful and
useful fi-uits, mor e especially on account of i t s long
