Ophr^s, Linn. Ophrys is the Greek appellation for
eyebrows, and is said to be applied to this genus
because of the fringe of'the inner sepals. Linn. 20,
Or. 1, Nat. Or. Orchidacace. The species of this
genus are highly curious, and worth a place in
every collection. They thrive best in a f rame in a
m i x t u r e of loam, peat, and chalk, broken small;
t h e lights sliould be put on in very wet or frosty
weather. It is advisable to have some turfy grass
growing where they are planted, as they can only
be increased from seeds, which are parasitic when
young, and will lay hold of the grass when they
first vegetate. They will ripen seed without difficulty
if care be taken to rub the pollen on the
stigma. The seeds should be sown as soon as ripe,
and when come up sufficiently, to be transplanted
to where they are to remain.
