half-ripened wood, planted in sand and placed in

DISEMMA, Lahillard. From dis, double, andsemma, a
crown. Linn. 10, Or. 2, Nat. (3r. Passijloracecey a
genus nearly allied to Passijiora. Ir. is easily cultivated
in a pot with wire trellis, and is remarkable
for the flowers being nearly white in the bud, and,
on first expanding, gradually assuming a yellow or
tawnv tint, and finally becoming a bVick red. It
may be treated as Passijiora.

DISOCACTUS, Lindley. Fromrfw, two, isos, equal, and
cactos. Linn. 12, Or. 1, Nat. Or. Cactacea, This
was formerly referred to Cereus, from wJiich family
it may, however, be readily known by the number
of sepals being constantly twice 2, and that of the
petals the same. It was introduced by George Ure
Skinner, Esq., in 1839, to Sir Charles Lemon, Bart.,
M.P. It forms a graceful bush, from two to three
feet high, but will, no doubt, attain a much larger
size if trained against a trellis, and sufiicient room
allowed for it to spread- the flowers are of a deep
pink colour; only one flower is produced at the
extremity of each branch, but they open in succession
for a considerable time, and are succeeded by
beautiful little blood-coloured berries, scarcely so
lar^e as the common sloe. A turfy ioam, mixed
with sharp sand and leaf mould, suits it best;
when the plant is growing a moist atmosphere is
most suitable, but in winter it should be kept dry,
with plenty of light. It may be increased by cuttings
or seeds.

Linn. 5, Or. 2, Nat. Or. UmbellifercB. This is the
gum ammoniac plant. "It grows principally on
the plains between Yudecaust and Kumisha, in the

a collection received by Sir Charles Lemon, in 1837,
from Mr. John llule. Superintendent of the Ileal
del Monte Mines, Mexico, in the neighbourhood of
which it is probably a native. It flowered in the
greenhouse at Carclew, in June, 1839, and continued
during July and August to send out a succession of
five or six flowers daily. It promises to produce
seeds, by which there is every chance of its being
increased."—Bot. Reg.
