T h e whole of this family and th a t of Trichomanes re q u ire
growing in a moist shady situation. T h e soil must bo very
fibry and spongy pea t, to which a small qu an tity of silver-sand
should be added. Two inches of this compost is sufficient,
the remainder of th e pot being en tire ly drainage material. The
soil should rise above the rim of th e pot, and th e plants be
p egged down u pon it. Place th e p o t iii' a glazed saucer-pan,
and cover w ith a hand-glass. T h e plants must always he k e p t
moist, b u t n o t stagnant. K e e p the glasses clean, and wipe
them dry. U n d e r this tre a tm en t b eautiful specimens may be
grown.

A P K E T T Y dwarf genus with membranaceous pe llu c id fronds,
v arying from simple to decompound multifid.
Veins simple or forked, free.
Sori te rmina l, freq u e n tly sunk within th e segments on which
th e y are placed.
In d u sium tu b u la r, or urceolate, th e receptacle continued b e y
o n d th e sporangia and mouth o f the ind u sium , freq u en tly
elongated and filiform.
T h e re is one British repre sen ta tiv e , the Trichomanes radicans.
Most of th e species in h ab it warm climates.
V e ry few are cu ltiv a ted in this country.
