mosses th an F e rn s , two o f wh ich , H . tunhridgense and I I .
unilaterale, are natives of G re a t B rita in . T h e y are all difficult
to cultivate, which ren d e rs th e foreign species ra re in a living
state in this country.
T h e fronds are p e llu c id , membranaceous, simple, or decompound,
with a c reeping and mostly filiform rhizoma.
Sori situated w ith in a two-valved involucre.
Veins dichotomously b ran ch ed , be in g simple an d costEcform
in th e segments.
The name is d e riv ed from th e G re ek , h ymen— o. membrane,
and phyUon—a leaf.
Kn own in E n g la n d as th e “ F ilm F e rn ,” or “ F ilm y F e rn .”
