The earth being in great distress, unfixed and liable to be c^ v e il t o ’ arid- frb”by

condition in the universe might be fixed. The suit, moon, and sky,
with the distress in wfeiBh’the-earth was, all eame to tend their assistance: • a violent

bulency. The continual presence o f the sun and moon occasioned perpetual day-

At the request o f S a n g y a n g G u r u , the deity granted that he should have nine male
and five female children born unto him,, without the assistance o f a mother.
One o f the sons, called M a h aM w a , being furnished with, one o f the daughters, called
M a h a d& w i, .as a wife, w|s,$en t .to. preside injtfce eggt, H e was jjtjoreoyef- provided
with afort and palace ctf silver, a sea of 'cocoa-nut milk, and a wh|te jp & j i .bird. His
letters weretfta, n o , c h a , m , and*cr, (the five-first letters o f the Javan alphabet), and
his day, U g i (which signifies sweet).
The second son, S a n g y a n g S& m b u , Was sent to preside in the south : the daughter
allotted to him for a consort was S a n g y d n a . His k r d t o n was o f copper; his bird was

The third son, S a n g y a n g K a m a j d y a (the most beautiful)^ was sent to nresids in the
west : the daughter allotted to him for a wife was D e m i R â t e 7 i~ ( which signifies the
most beautiful female). His k r d t o n was o f gold ; his sea was o f honey = his bird Was
a k fip â d o n g , or yellow raiftor; -his letters were p a , dm, p a , y a , and n i a ; his day
w a s p o n .
The fourtli «»b, S x m g y a n g W i r n u , was sent to preside in the north : til® daughter
allotted to-him for a wife. Wag-Sri«-.-His-day was z ù â g ê ; his k r à t e n was o f iron ; his
sea wap indigo ; his birdwas a g& g a , or croW ; his letters were m d p g a ^ i k , t a , m â n g Ê ?

'4'hese. arrangements being made, S a n g y a n g G u m went under the earth to put
things to rights there. , The earth .consisted o f seven regions, one Wider the other,'
like so many folds. In the first region he appointed the goddess D é m i P r a t iw i to
preside;, in the second region, a god named S a n g y a n g K u s i k a ? In the third region,
a god named S a n g y a n g G d n g ig a ; in the fourth region, a god named S a i ï g y a n g S in -,
d d la g in the fifth, S a n g y a n g JQ a s am p a la n ; in thè sixth, a god named S a n g y a n g M a ,
n ih â r a im the seventh i^ fo n ,-ft-g o ti named S a n g y a n g A n t a S a g a , and who Was
head over all the ptjiers,
Then S a n g y a n g G u r u returning from under the earth, and observing that it wag-
depressed towards (hg west and elevated towards the east, summoned all the' deities
to a consultation respecting what might be the cause o f this inclination. The deity o f
the west said, that it wastin consequence o f a large mountain that Was towards the-
west, and whose weight bore down the earth in- that quarter. S t i n g y a n g G & t t i then
directed that the mountain should he removed from the west and placed in the edst
so as to preserve the earth in due balance. All the deities were accordingly forthwith
dispatched to effect the. same.
S a n g y a n g G u r u , at the same time, got S a n g y a n g W i s é s a to create him a Vulcan’
