MADURA,
This island having been ceded to the .Dutch, in the same, manner as the
other possessions on Java, the Sultan/of Madtira and the chiefs,of I>ama-
kdsan and' S&menap were always considered by them in nearly 1% same light
as the other regents along the coast, with'the exception^'nTy^^^gher
title and some' more personal consideration granted especially-fcrthe Sultan
of BanMlan, usually styled the Sultan of Madura, both M a'ecbuni ofjris
birth and of some important services rendered in the war of Java, from lj?4<Q
to 1748.'
