the country), to be freely elected by the. inhabitants of the village itsélf from among

Police aatlès. 11. The care of the police, in their respective villages, shall be entrusted to th«u|
charge; and for the due preservation of peace, the prevention of, offermes, and thfj
discovery and arrest of offenders, they are required to be particularly .careful that a
sufficient night watch be regularly maintained. For . this purpose they are authorized
to require each of the male inhabitants to take his turn in the performance ofoimg
duty; and, at any time, to call on all to aid in the pursuit and ^pprelicnsion. of
offenders, or to execute generally any of the other duties that may occur.
Property sto- 12. The Heads of Villages will also be held responsible for the amount gf 'all
