
From this period the provinces of Jipang became subject ïô thd chief of
Pdjung ; and his sister at Kali Nidmat, being informed of this'sircfcé^S by
Panambdhan expressed her readiness to fulfil a promise which she had made,
of conferring upon him all her lands and property, PanamMhan*ïâè&ÈtiedL
accepting this offer, alleging that he had only obeyed the ördéi-s his
sovereign. He however received from her, on this1 occasion,- two' 1 puSdka
tings,, in one of which was set a large diamond, ' in the other s rmby,
which had formerly belonged to thé h'obsè óf Majapâhit.
Tire spoil taken in the war was then divided according to usage,' and to
Panambdhan was assigned a population of eighteen hundred working vrilën
in the district of Mentduk, afterwards called Matdrem. The lands of Kâli
Nidmat were left in the possession öf his sister, and 'those''of DethdJc
restored to hisnephew: -A r ia Pamgtrirëe&ïveû thé ® l @ ' ' Sintan of
JDemdk.
The province of Mentduk or Matdrem, at that period did not contain
more than three hundred villages,“ scattered in different parts of^the
country. On tlfe arrival of Panambdhan near BramBdnan, he was ré&ejÿêd
by the S&nan Adi Jâga, who would not allow him to perform „the usual
ceremony of kissing his feet, thus, by implication predicting iM future

bdhan was duly installed, under the title of Kidi Gëdê Matdrem.
When the government of Kidi Gêdi Matdrem was fully established, lie
was desirous of obtaining his son from the prince of P'djàngç who had
retained .him as' an adopted child, and feared rtaparf‘wîtlfKim;m^dsé=-
quencé of the prophecy of which He was' aware; predicting the -fixture
greatness of the descendants of Jdka Sisila; but die? the entreaties of %the
S&nan Kali Jaga, he consented to part with him, under a stipulation,' upon
oath, from Panambdhan, that he would not undertake any thing prejudicial
to him during his lifetime.
In the year 1490, the chief of Pq/ang, from religious .motivés,, paid a
visit to S&nan Girt, accompanied by Kidi Gédé Matdrem, and a numerous
retinue of chiefs and priests. He was mounted on an elephant, and assumed
all the pomp which had been customary with the sultans of Bintârà. Dn
this occasion he was formally installed as sultan, in ' lie presence, of'.the
chiefs of the eastern provinces. The S&nan Girt, at the same time, noticing
Kidi Gêdé Matdrem, and being informed of his descent, declared that his
family would one day rule all Java, and urged the Sultan of Pàjang ' to
protect and befriend him.

accompanied him on his; first; coming to Matdrem, and their descendants,
enjoining them* on. no apcorint whatever, to shed thev hfood, whatever
crime they might’ commit* but! if necessary., 'tp punish them in some other
Way. To this they most solemnly bound themselves ; and from this period,
strangling is said to have been introduced as a capital punishment among
thé. Javans.
His. son,, now- called Mas. Angh&bdi Suta Wijdya, had an amour with the
grand-daughter of Sheik Wali ben Müsen, who was intended, to become one
of: the concubines of Sultan Bdj-ang. Upon her becoming pregnant, he
fied first- to Ghéribon,,. where he implored protection from the Sultan, but to
up. purpose; and afterwards towards Budnu, where collecting, the rabble of
the country,1 hè commenced Hostilities against, the chief. The Sultan of
Pifymg-, however, at length offering him a pardon, on condition of. his
marrying the ggd,' he returned, and was again received into favour j but
not before he had-reduced the chmfi.bjf Bmnu toi submission, and rendered*
that province tributary to Matdrem^

Kediri, Mddion, Blop'a, Jipang, and Pasuruan, declared themselves independent.

chief. About the same time, Santa, Gund, the chief of east Balanibemgan,.

western districts of that province under hisantHorityy subduing, the-principality
of Panardkan and expeilingthe princes and his followers.
Kidi Gédé: Matdrem died in the year 149-7* after having, by bis mild and. — imb
equitable administration, converted the province of Matdrem, from a,
wilderness into, a fertile and populous country, and induced many, of the
surrounding districts voluntarily to submit to his authority.
