terposed cilia. Lid conical, short and acute, sometimes
slightly acuminate, but never beaked. Calyptra dimidiate.
There is an annulus at the mouth of the capsule.
This moss is considered to be truly distinct from all the
varieties of Hypnum cupressiforme, which it nearly resembles
; ripening its capsules at a very different season. The
chief marks of distinction are found in the acute short lid
and the different form of the leaf. There is besides a difference
of aspect easily recognised by the practised observer.—
