Gen. Char. Fruit-stalk terminal. Peristome double,
outer, of 16 teeth ; inner, a membrane divided
into 16 equal segments, usually with intermediate
filiform processes. Calyptra dimidiate.
Spec. Char. Stem erect. Leaves oblong-ovate,
acute, serrulate above, nerved nearly to the summit.
Capsule pendulous, turbinate. Lid conical-
acuminate.

Stems tufted, nearly simple, but often furnished with innovations,
from one to three inches long. Lower leaves
scattered, upper ones more crowded, ovate and somewhat
tapering upwards, rather acute, serrulate near the apex,
slightly concave, sub-erect, pale glaucous green, with a reddish
nerve extending very nearly to the summit, reticulation
rather large. Fruit-stalk about an inch long, rather thick,
glaucous, as well as the ripening fruit. Capsule at first
nearly pyriform or obovate; at length when fully ripe it
becomes turbinate with a wider mouth, and in drying acquires
a bright red tint. Outer peristome of 16 linear
