account o f a manis, the tail as broad and more obtufe than that Nzw Mawk,
o f the common ihort-tailed, Hiji. Hyad. ii. N° 460. It is called,
in the Sanjkrit language, the Vajracite, or Thunderbolt reptile,
from the exceffive hardnefs of its fcales. In its flomach was
found a number of fmall Hones, probably taken in to affifl:

I sh a l l , being on the fubject o f zoology, mention a delicious
and beautiful fifh, which comes up the river annually as high,
as Calcutta, in ihoals immenfe. The Polynemus Paradifeus o f
Linnceuj, the Mango fifh of Bdw. tab. 208. It receives the Masco Fks.
Englijh name either from its brilliant orange color, like a ripe
mango, or from its coming up in the Mango. Its length is,
from the tip o f the nofe to the end o f the tail, nine inches;
but what gives it great Angularity, are feven ftiff fubftances
like thick bridles, which iflue from near the gills ; they
gradually lengthen to the exterior, which is in length fix-
teeri inches. Thefe fiihes firft appear about Calcutta from
the fea in June, Ipawn, and return to the fait water in fix
weeks. It is not known from what part they come; it is
certain, that it is not from the fide which wafhes Qrixa, at left
my, filièra! friend Doctor Patrick Ruffel informed me, that he
n ev e r obferved: them-in that fea. They are faid to be the belt

which abound moil are thole o f the Cyprinus, or carp kind;
of them 1 obferve the Engli/b Chub, and I have heard o f the
common Carp, of great fize.. The Anjar.a is a. finali fpecies.
