T hese auguit ruins are in the little Circar o f Annagoondy,
■which does not extend above twenty miles around this vaft city.
It is very Angular that that little Circar is now poflefled by a
lineal defcendant o f Ram-Rajab, the laft great monarch of Bee-
jamaggur, and its attendant nations Canarine and Malabar,
united feven hundred years before under the rule-of Kifnendeo.
Tippoo wiihed to referve this little tra£t to himfelf, for the fatis-
fadtion o f generoufly reftoring to the defcendant the fmall
relique of the great empire o f his anceftors. He is denied the
title of Rajab, inftead o f which he has the diminutive Ray eel
beftowed on h im ; this fuitable to his revenues, which do not
exceed two lacks o f rupees, or twenty-five thoufand pounds'
per annum, with the empty regality of a mint at Annagoondy.
A b o u t fifty miles to the iouth of Bifnagur is Sera or Scirra,
capital o f a confiderable Soubabjbip, till it was reduced by Ayder
A li, in conjunction with Bazaletzing king o f Adoni. It was1
articled that he ihould have all the moveable plunder, fueh as
cannon, ammunition, &c. &c. and Ayder remain poflefled of
the place. The city was taken, and the agreement fulfilled, fo
that Ayder remained matter o f an extenfive territory adjacent to
that o f My/ore, o f which he was proelamed Soubab. Sera ftands
about fixty miles to the north-weft o f Bangalore, The Marquis
made the foubabjhip o f the former the quarters of the Mahrattas,
at the time their fervices were not wanted, in the interval between
his two great campaigns.

T h e s e diftridts, the laft excepted, with Soilapour, another to
the weft, on the north fide o f the Kri/hna, are part of the boundaries
o f the once potent kingdom o f G o l c o n d a . It had G olconda.
been part of the antient Tellingana, which had in old times extended
as far as the bower of Pifiapour, and along the coaft all
the way from the river Pennar fouth, to Orixa northward, where
to this day Mr. Rennel enables me to fay, that the language o f
Tellingana is ftill fpoken. Golconda, fince it has been poflefled •
by the Nizam, has been enlarged by the addition of the territory
o f Dowiatabad, fince named Aurungabad, and alfo part of
Berar. The Nizam's dominions from iouth to north are from
Lat. 150 50', near Canoul, to Lat. 21° 25', near Gawile. The
greateft breadth from eaft to weft is about three hundred and
feventy miles.
