parvis paucifioris, involucri squamis 1-seriatis scariosis dorso sericeis, fi. g 6-S glaberrimis.
I-Li b . Northern Island. East coast, at Turakirae, Colenso.
AL. Colenso has sent this curious little species several times, but always in a yery unsatisfactory state, as I
nowhere find female flowers. Stem rigid, wiry, creeping, several inches long, emitting very short, erect, leafy
branchlets. leaves silky, 1 inch long, very narrow, pinnatifid ; the lobes cut sharply and deeply, or entire. Scapes
silky and almost shaggy, shorter than the leaves. Capitula very small, è Inch broad, with a few quite smooth
flowers ; the males only seen. Involucral scales few, four to six in one series, silky, rather membranous and transparent.—
This little plant will probably be found to vary much in the size of the foliage and capitula, though Mr.
Colenso’s specimens are very uniform in those respects.
Gen. IX. MYRIOGYNE, Less.
Capitulum multiflorum, heterogamum, discoideum. Involucri squamæ pauciseriatæ, disco breviores.
Receptaculum convexum, papillosum, nudum v. pilosum. Flosculi exteriores ? , multiseriati; corolla tubulosa,
perbrevi, ore subintegro ; stylo exserto, bifido : disci J , pauci ; corolla late campanulata, 4-fida ; stylo apice
discoideo v. bifido. Achenia fl. % lineain-clavata, angulata, epapposa, inferne pilosa, 11. ^ stipitiformia.
A very curious, prostrate, creeping weed, quite smooth, with sessile, axillary, rounded, inconspicuous, yellow
beads, which are many-flowered ; all but a few central flowers female. Involucre of two series of linear, blunt,
smooth or pubescent scales, shorter than the flowers. Rsceptacle convex, papillose, naked or with a few long hairs,
Femak flowers very numerous, densely packed; achenium very long, club-shaped, hairy, ribbed or angled ; coroUa
very short indeed, tubular ; style bitid, exserted. Hermaphrodite flowers very few, in the centre of the female, barren ;
corolla broadly campanulate, four-cleft; stamens four; anthers very short; styk exserted, discoid and bifid. (Name
from pvptos, a myriad, and yvvn, female ; in allusion to the numerous female flowers.)

Ha b . Northern and Middle Islands ; abundant in waste places, chiefly about settlements. Banks and
Solander, etc.
A very common Australian, Mauritius, South Sea Island, and Indian plant ; sometimes, espoolally when it
grows in dry places, possessed of pungent properties, causing sneezing when bruised under tbe nose. Stems four
inches to a foot long. Leaves J - I J inch long, smooth, linear-cuneiform, coarsely toothed towards the point. Heads
of florets i inch broad.—This is very closely allied to the Chilian M. elatinoides, l.ess.
Gen. X, TRINEUEON, Ilook.fll.
Capitulum heterogamum, discoideum. Involucrum campanulatum ; squamis coriaceis, linearibus, 2-
seriatis, æqualibus. Receptaculum, angustum, papillosum, nudum. Flosculi radii. ? , plurimi (8- 10), pluri-
seriati; corolla tubulosa, elongata, ore .3-fido; stylo longe exserto, bifido : d is ciS , pauci, masculi, tubuiosi,
tubo superne subcampanulato, 4-fido ; staminibus 4 ; stylo exserto, apice incrassato, bifido. Achenium Ü. Î
lineari-oblongnm, .3-4-gonum, angulis incrassatis; fl. Ü breve, stipitiforme.
Very small, smooth, coriaceous, linear-leaved, alpine herbs, hitherto only found in the mountains of New Zealand,
Lord Auckland’s Group, and Campbell’s Island, where they form tufts amongst rocks, etc. The genus is
nearly allied to Scleroleima of Mount "Wellington in Tasmania, and to Aljrotanella of Cape Horn ; and still more
nearly to Ceratclla of Lord Auckland’s Group, a genus established with this in the ‘Flora Antarctica,’ The New
Zealand species differs from the original T. spathulatum in having a four- not three-angled achenium of the female
flowers, and in wanting the cellular margins of the achenium aud the three transparent neiwes of the involucral
scales (from which the generic name was derived). In respect of the tetragonous achenium, it is more allied to
Ceratclla, whence it is probable tbat these genera should be combined.—OapUulum bidden among the leaves, of
eight to fourteen flowers. Involucral scaks coiaaceous, linear, in two series, equal in length, erect, with one or more
transparent nerves. Receptacle naiTow, convex, papülose. naked. Femak Jlowers much the most numerous, with
large tlnee- to four-angled achenia, and tubular tbree-tootlied corollas ; style far exserted, bifid. Disc flowers very
few, central, on short achenia, tubular and rather campanulate. fom'-cleft, with four included stamens, and au ex-
seated, discoid, or bifid style.
1. Trineui-on pusillum. Hook. fil. ; glaberrimnm, caulibus cæspitosis foliosis gracilibus radices nnmero-
sas fibrosas emittentibus, foliis confertis patulis curvis anguste Hiiearibus rigidis coriaceis subacutis supra

vix pellucidis, aclieniis fl. ¥ 4-goms, stylo fl. disci bifido.
H a b . Northern Island. Snowy places amongst the Ruabine Mountains, Colenso.
Skms an inch high, slender, m y , leafy all over, emitting long fibrous roots. Leaves coriaceous, i inch long,
spreading, linear, narrow, acute, flat above, witb a promiueut midi-ib below. Heads solitary, inconspicuous, sunk
amongst the upper leaves, a inch long, on short peduncles. Achenia of the female flowers four-angled. Styk of
the disc ilowers bifid.
Gen. XI. CRASPEDIA, Forst.
Capitula 5-8-flora, homogama, in glomeriilum rotunduiu bracteatum aggregata, racbidi communi
brevi pedicellis brevissimis inserta. Receptaculum angustissimnm, margine paleis linearibus liyalinis oims-
tum. Involvxri squamæ membranaceæ, byaliiiæ, lineari-ellipticæ, flosculis æquilougæ. CoroUa tubulosa,
5-dentata; antheris basi 2-setosis ; stigmatibus inclusis. Ac/iesiaM oblongam, villosum. PiyiyiKS 1 -seria-
tus, dense pluinosus.—Herbæ simplices, basi foliosce, seapigeroe; scapis elongatis, 1-cephalis.
Herbaceous, stemless plants, witli spreading radical leaves. and single, erect, long scapes, bearing a round,
silky, bracteate bail, which consists of many capitida or heads, crowded together and attached by short pedicels
to a central stalk. Heads of five to eight small, yellow, tubular, five-toothed florets. Involucre of long, very membranous,
transparent, hyaline, linear scales. Receptack very narrow, bearing towards the margin slender hyaline
scales scattered amongst the flowers. Pappus of one row of very featheiy hairs. Anthers terminated below witb
two tails. Slyks included. Achenia baiiy.—This genus may be recognized by its solitary round balls of minute
yellow flowers ; it has been found nowhere else but in Australia and Tasmania. Tbe species are extremely varmble
in size, hairiness, and habit, being slender or stout, according to tbe nature of the soil, exposure, etc. I bave therefore
referred to one species all the very difterent-lookiug specimens from New Zealand, many of which resemble the Tasmanian
C. Richea very closely indeed. (Name from spaavrebov, a fringe ; on account of the white border of the leaf.)
