A glabrous shrub, 2-3 feet high, very bke V. Im h in most characters, but smaller, with the leaves more
densely imbricated, and truncated above the petiole. Bacenee shorter, fewer-flowered. Leaves i - i inch long, very
thick, conaceous. sharp, keeled, concave, suddenly truncate, with a short thick petiole and slender midrib. Racemes
scarcely longer than the leaves, few-flowered. Mowers large, white with purple veins.—Very nearly allied to Y.
hems, and perhaps not distinct; the Y. oiora of Lord Auckland’s Group (Fl. Antarct. p. 62. t. 41) is probably a
variety of this.

H a b . Middle Island. Akaroa, Raottl. Port Cooper, Lyall.
A remarkably distinct and pretty little species, with much too loosely placed leaves to harmonize well with the
other species of this section.—A span to a foot high ; branches and racemes glandular, pubescent. Leaves spreading,
obovate, or linear-obovate, or rounded-spatliulate, blunt, crenate, coriaceous, 1 inch long. Racemes paniculate, or
corymbose at the generally elongated ends of the branches ; with small leaves at the bases of the peduncles, whence
the branches appear paniculate. Flowei's crowded, somewhat distichous, sessile. Sepals ovate, acute, nearly as long
as the small coriaceous blunt capsule, whose valves are bifid.
§ c. Herbaceous, prostrate or creeping plants, with slendei' woody stems, and scattered, opposite, toothed, smooth
leaves. Racemes axillary and terminal, simple, erect, solitary. Capsule broad, laterally compressed, two-lobed,
loculicidal.

H a b . Mountains of the Northern Island, aud iu the Southern and Middle Islands ; abundant, Forster,
A very handsome but extremely variable species, of which I have superb specimens from Dr. Lyall’s Herbarium,
collected in Dusky Bay.—Stems 4 inches to 2g feet long, slender, ivith two lines of pubescence. Leaves -4-4 inches
long, lanceolate or linear-lanccolate, petiolate, acuminate, coarsely semte, coriaceous, one-nerved, pale below. Racemes
axiUary, on slender peduncles, 3-6 inches long, raauy-flowered. Mowers loosely disposed, on slender pedicels
4 inch long. Sepals ovate or lanceolate, blunt, acute, or acuminate. Corolla inch across. Capsule turgid, 4
inch broad, two-lobed.—The Northern-Island specimens are all smaUer than those from Dusky Bay ; some are quite
small, and approach states of the foUowing closely allied species.
