137. C. polystaohys Becc.^Leaf-almHis 3-5-4 cm. in diam., covered at short
i n t e r v a l s -with complete membranous rings which are densely fringed with long
blackish criniform bristles. Leaves large ; raciiis spinulouB above. Zeajeis numerous,
e q u i d i s t a n t , linear-enaiform, up to 50 cm. long, 2 cm. broad, with 3 costaa which
a r e more or less bristly on both surfaces. Femah spadix about 1 m. long, pyramidate,
diffuse, with 4-5 gradually smaller partial inflorescences on each side;
p a r t i a l inflorescences with a distinct pedicellar part inserted far inside their own
gpathes: the largest 50-55 cm. long and composed of 18-20 secoodary spathes, of
which the lower ones bear 2-3 spikelets each: only the spathels near the summit
h a v i n g solitary s p i k e l e t s ; these distinctly stalked, 6-S cm. long, with 14-16 flowers on
each side ; involucrophorum calyciform, nan-owed at the base. Female flowers 3 - 5 mm.

cm. in diam. with numerous, approximate, small, membranous crests which are fringed
w i t h capillary brittle spiculee. Leaves very large ; rachis spinulous above. Leaflets
v e r y numerous, equidistant, elongate-ensiform, 50-70 cm. long, 2-5-3-5 cm. broad, 3.
costulate, more or loss bristly on both surfaces; margins rather distantly bristly
ciliate. Male spadis> panicled, shorter than the leaves ; spikelets 20-25 mm. long with
1 5 - 2 0 very crowded bifarioue flowers on each side. Male flowers 3 mm. long.
Female spadix panicled, about 1 m. long ; partial inflorescences 50-60

subpedicellate. Female flowers about 6 mm, long. Fruit ovoi(i-elliptic, <
