¿6. C. austraHs Mart.—Rcandent. Sheathed stem about 15 mm. in diacQ. Leafsheaths
completely covered -with crimform spicules. Leaves about 60 cm. long, the
petiole 4-0 cm. long, flattish above. Leaflets 10-18 on each side, slightly inequidistant,
lanceolate or narrowly lanceolatc, 15-27 cm. long, 20-28 mm. broad,
unicostate, all nerves on both surfaces and margins naked. Male sfadix elongate,
flagelliform, ultra-decompound; primary spathes very elongate; spikelets \vith numerous
flatly bifarious flowers. Female spadu simply decompound, as much as 2 m. long,
including a slender nculeolate flagellum; partial inflorescences 25-30 cm. long, with
8-12 spikelets on each side; tliese n-19 cm. long, vermicular, flexuous, with 8-14
flowers on each side. Fruihng perianth explanate. Fruit subsphffiric, about 14 mm.
in diam. Scales slightly channellei along the middle.

57. C. Moti Bailey.—Scandent. Sheathed stem about mm. ir. diam. Leaf-sheaths
densely armed with subseriate spreading acicular spines. Leaves as muc-h as 1-8 m.
*long; petiole cylindi-aceous, about 20 cm. long. Lcajlcts very numei-ous, equidistant,
elongate-lanccolate or ensifomi, 40-45 cm. long, 20-2 mm. broad, with 3 slender bristly
cost£8 above, naked beneath, margins spinulous. Female spadie simply decompound,
terminating in a very long and robust strongly clawed flagellum; partial infloresccnce
elongate, with many spikelets on each side; spikelets 5-6 em. long, with 5-6
flowers on each side. Fniiting perianth not pedicelliform. Fruit subsphjoric, about
12 mm. in diam., strongly beaked. Scales slightly channelled along tho middle.

58. C. radicalis 11. Wendl—Scandent, of moderate size. Leaves rather large;
rachis in the intermediate portion flattish beneath where it is armed along the middle
witli small solitary claws, bifaced above with an acute and spinulous angle. Lea/lets
numerous, equidistant, very narrowly or elongatc-lanceolate, 4o cm. long, 20-23 mm.
broad, sub-3-costulate mainly near the base; the 3 costulfe with long bristles above,
and very inconspicuously spinulous beneath; margins appressedly spinulous.
Australia: N. E. Queensland.
59. C- zebrinus Becc.—Scandent. Sheathed stem about 2 cm. in diam. Leaf-sheaths
ornarHented with very many, crowded, subannular, interrupted, lamelliform ridges, which
are finely spinulous on their crest. Oerea deciduous. Leaves about 1"7 m. long; the
petiole 81 cm. long, ilat above. Leaflets very numerous, closely set, equidistant, very
narrowly linear, 25-30 cm. long, 1 cm. broad, 3-costulate, tlie costulaa rather closely
and minutely bristly on both surfaces; margins very finely ciliolate.

60. C. serrulatus Bccc.—Scandent. Sheathed stem as thick as a finger. Leafsheaths
slightly clavate, armed with not many straight scattered subulate spines. Leaves
about 1'9 m. long ; the petiole loug (30 cm.), channelled above. Leaflets nujnerous,
clobsly set, equidistant, shining on both surfaces, narrowly linear, 15-16 cm. long,
S-10 mm. broad; the mid-costa spinulous on both surfaces, and having on each

side a very slender nerve which is remotely bristly above and naked beneath;
margins very finely and closely apinulous-serrate.

67. 0. Reinwardtii Mart.—Scandent. Sheathed stem 1-0-2-5 cm. in diam. Leafsheaths
beset with unequal, short or long, scattered subulate spines. Leaves, including
the petiole, 1-1-5 m, long, petiole 10-25 cm. long, armed with long straight or sometimes
hooked spines; rachis armed beneath with solitary, often long-tipped claws and
long solitary straight deflexed spines, which are light coloured as are those of tho leafsheaths.
Leaflets rather numerous, subequidi.stant, linear-ensiform, distinctly 3-costate,
the 3 costie spinulous above; beneath only the mid-costa spinulous. Male spadix
elongate-flagellifonn; primary spathes elongate; jjartial inflorescenccs 20—35 cm
loug; spathels shortly infundibulifoim, acute. Female spadix simply decompound;
elongate, with not many remote partial inflorescences; spikolets 7-13 cm. long, with
14-30 horizontally bifarious flowers on each side ; spathels (as in the male spikelets)
strongly veineJ. Fruitinj perianth callous at the base and shortly pedicelliform, not
or indistinctly striately veined. Fruit subglobular, 10 mm, in diam., suddenly contracted
into a rather loug beak. Scales in 15 series, veiy slightly charnelled along
the middle and with a rather acute triangular point.

62. C. heteroideus BL—Scandent, slender. Sheathed stem J-1-5 cm. in diammore
or less armed with subulate light coloured spines. Leaves 50-90 cm. long; petiole
rather elongate; rachis armed beneatli witii a few long straight deflexed spines and
with long-tipped claws. Leaflets linear-ensiform, 3-costate; the 3 costas spinulous above;
underneath that of the centre spariugly spinulous or glabrous as ate the side ones,
Male spadic slender, elongate-iiagelliform, partially supra-decompound, with not many
very remote pai-tial inliorescenccs; spathels shortly infuiidibuliform, prolonged at one
side into a ciliate, elongate, spreading point. Female spadix sim2>ly decompound;
spikelets; S—5 cm. long. Fruiting perianth shortly pedicelliform, coarsely stiiately
veined. Fruit ellipsoid, beaked, 12-14 mm. long, 9 mm. in diaui. Scales in 18-19
series, obtuse.

C. heteroideus var. depauperatus Becc.—-Very slender, almost unanned. Leaves
with smooth petiole and rachis. Leaflets entii'ely devoid of spinules beneath.
