t h e pinniferous part, the cirrus ' 6 - 1 m. long, somewhat irregularly armed with
b a l f - w h o r l e d claws ; potiole rather short. Leajlets subequidiatant, 18-20 on each
side, very narrowly lanceolate, 30-40 cm. long, 2 0 - 2 7 mm. broad, with 3 bristly
costfe above, smooth underneath ; margins conspicuously ciliato. Female spadix
2 - 2 - 7 m. long with many spreading and arched partial inflorescences; spikelots
arched, the largest 7 - 8 cm, long with two assurgent series of 8-10 flowers each ;
i n v o l u c r o p h o r am pedicelliform ; involucre f u r n i s h e d with a pedicel, 1-5-2 mm. long,
f o r the neuter flower. Fruit, stalked by ihe p e d i c e l l i f o rm involucrophorum, globose,
1 ? - 1 4 mm. in diam. Scales deeply channelled. Seed globular, coarsely pitted ;
a l b u m e n subruminate ; embryo basal.

123. C. plicatui Bl. — S l e n d e r and probably scandent. Leaves about 60 cm. long,
t e r m i n a t e d by two decurront leaflets (sometimes cirriferous ? ) ; petiole very short.
Leajlets not very numerous, inequidistant, paired on each side of the rachis,
1 3 - 1 5 cm. long, 15-18 mm. broad, subspathulate, concave-convex, v e i y suddenly
c a u d a t e - a c u m i n a t e , concolorous, deeply longitudinally plicate, and with about 7
costffi quite smooth on both surfaces.

124. C. Minahassce Warb.—Scandent, very slender. Leaf-sheaths 6-7 mm. in
diam., i r r e g u l a r l y armed with flat subulate spines. Leaves 35-50 cm. long with a
s l e n d e r f e e b l y clawed cirrus ; petiole 1-3 cm. long. Leajlets 14-16 in all, approxim
a t e in 4 groups of 4, s e p a r a t e d b y long vacant spaces, subconcolorous, oblanceolate,
w i t h 3-5 slender smooth costse. Female spadix elongate-flagolliform ; spikelets subcicorpioid,
inserted above the mouth of their respective spatliej with a distinct
¡Lxillary callus. Fruit ovoid, distiuctly beaked, about 1 cm. long, 6 mm. broad.
Scales reddish.brown, not or slightly channelled. Seed ovoid, about 6 ram. long,

125. c. Cawa Bl.—Slender. Leaf-sheaths densely armed with sleader straight
spines. Leaves distinctly cirriferous ; petiole elongate. Leajleis few, alternate, remote,
s u b e q u i d i s t a n t , lanceolato, about 30 cm. l o n g w i t h about 5 (?) spinulous costa;. Female
spadix elongate, with 3-4 partial inflorescences, these b e a r i n g few, about 4 cm.
long, spikelets. Fnnt pisiform, mucronate.

lanceolate, acuminate, unicostate, those of the terminal pair connate up to about
t h e middle. Female spadix short, rigid with few small erect, 6 - 7 cm. long, partial
i n f l o r e s c e n c e s ; spikelets 18-20 mm. long with 6 - 8 flowers in all, biseriate and
p o i n t i n g u p w a r d s ; involucrophorum subdiscoid, shortly pedicellate. Fruiting perianth
pedicelliform. Fruit broadly ovate-ollipti«, about 12 mm. long, 8 mm. broad
s u d d e n l y beaked. Scales reddish-brown, faintly channelled. Seed with equable
a l b u m e n .

Leaf-sheath very t h i c k l y coriaceous, yellowish like the other parts of the plant, armed
w i t h short semicouic ascendent spij^es. Leaves sub- or feebly c i r r i f e r o u s ; petiole
s h o r t . Leajlets very few (5 or more), i n e q u i d i s t a n t , oblong-obovate or spatfaulate,
s t r o n g l y concave-convex, about 20 cm. long, 6-7 cm. broad, 3-5-costate, smooth
on both s u r f a c e s ; margins quite smooth, thickened. Female spadix flagelliform, with
a slender aculeolat« rather short terminal appendix ; spikelets distichous, with a
d i s t i n c t axillary callus, slightly arched, 2-5-6 cm. long, with 8-15 subhorizontal
flowers on each side. Fruiting perianth shortly pedicelliform, IVuit ovoid-elliptic,
t o p p e d by a cyHndricous 3 mm. long beak, 12 mm. long, 7 mm. broad. Scales
v e r y light coloured, narrowly channelled. Seed oblong, 8 mm. long, coarsely p i t t e d;
albumen equable ; embryo basal.

C. spathulatus var. robustus Beca.Sheathed stem 20-22 mm. in diam. Leaf,
sheath flagella up to 2 m. in length. Leaves 1-1-3 m. long, subcirrifcrous. Leajlets
about 5 on each side of the rachis, some of them up to 40 cm. in l e n g t h , a f ew of
t h e summit smaller, semi-abortive and dccurrent along the aculeolate rachis. Female
spadix robust, partial inflorescences about 30 cm. long, with about 10 spikelets on
each side. Fruit about 15 mm. long.

129. 0- Martianus Becc.—Scandent, very slender. Leaf-sheaths yellowish like tlie
o t h e r p a r t s of the plant, armed with very small scmi.conic ascendent spines. Leaves
small, i m p a r i - p i n n a t e or subcirriferous, potiole obsolete. Leaflets aboufc 10 in all.
