d e s c r i p t i o n ) small, ovoid, apiculate, 12 mm. l o n g : scales in 18 series, of a very light
s t r aw colour, not channelled along the middle, with a narrow dark marginal line;
seed flattened, coarsely sinuously grooved on the back; chalazal fovea indistinct;
a l b u m e n e q u a b l e ; embryo basal.
HABITAT.—Not uncommon in several parts of the Island of Hong-Kong, Hanee.
OBSERVATIONS.—1 have seen one of Hance's specimens, No. 18229 in St. Petersb.
H e r b . It seems allied to C. viminalis, but with equisdistant leaflets.

DESCRIPTION.—Apparently scandent and rather slender or of moderate size. Sie)}ia

a c u t e l y trigonous, bifaced above with acute and smooth upper angle, flat beneath
•where armed -with small approximate solitary dark-tipped claws; leaflets numerous,
e q u i d i s t a n t , rather approximate, firmly papyraceous, opaque and subconcolorous on
b o t h surfaces, linear-lanceolate, attenuated to the base, gradually acuminate to the
summit, with 3 distinct bristly costae above; beneath the mid-costa only with a few
l o n g bristles; transverse veinlets not v e r y approximate, short and much i n t e r r u p t e d;
t h e margins, especially the lower one, slightly thickened by a marginal nerve, minutely
a n d very appressedly spinulous ; the lowest leaflets of the apical portion of the leaf
seen by me (27 cm. in length and with II leaflets on each side) 22 cm. long,
17 mm. broad; the others rather speedily decreasing in length and less acuminatet

prickly, t r u n c a t e or shortly split at tho mouth and slightly prolonged at the summit
i n t o a short triangular point ; partial inflorescences apparently rather numerous
n s e r t e d inside and issuing erect fi-om their respective spathe, rather rigid, pyramidal
i n outline, 12-18 cm. long with about 10 spikelets on each side; secondary spathes
cylindraceous, closely sheathing, unarmed, truncate at tho mouth and prolonged at
one side into a triangular very acute point ; spikelets inserted just at or a l i t t le
above the mouth of their own spathes, slightly arched, horizontal or deflexed
filiform ; the lower ones 5 - 6 cm. long with 12-13 flowers on each side, the others
speedily decreasing in length, those of the summit very short and with v e r y few
flowers; spathels cylindraceous at the base, rather suddenly expanded into a short
t r u n c a t e i n f u n d i b u l l f o rm limb, distinctly apiculate at one side ; involucrophorum
l a t e r a l l y attached outside its own spathel at the base of the one above, scale-like,

subdiscoid, almost e i p l a n a t e ; involucre also scale-like, asymmetric and almost e i p l a n a t e ;
a r e o l a of the neuter flower linear, depressed. Female flowers bifarious, small, about 3
mm. long, with the corolla almost twice as long as the calyx. Fruiting perianth
s h o r t l y pedicelliform, the calyx callous at the base, divided down almost to the
m i d d l e into 3 broadly t r i a n g u l a r lobes ; the segments of the corolla ovate-acute,
n e a r l y tvrice as long a s . t h e calyx. Fruit small, ovoid, conic at the summit when
T e r y young (not seen mature); scales in 18 series, straw-yellow at the baser
b r o a d l y bordered by reddish-brown ; the margins narrowly scarious and finely erosely
toothed , convex and not channelled along the middle (at least in the very young
f r u i t ) .
HABITAT.—Collected by Faber ia China ( l o w e r ? ) . Herb. Vindob.
OBSERVATIONS.—This seems allied to C. Walkerii, from wliich it difiers in t h e l e a f -
r a c h i s armed only with claws, and in the more elongate spadiijes with more numerous
smaller and more difiuse p a r t i a l inflorescences. Very f e w species of Calamus have the
corolla of the female flowers so conspicuously longer than the calyx as in this species.

m a n y partial inflorescences ; p r i m a r y spathes tubular, closely sheathing, t h i n l y coriaceous,
one of the lowest spathe somewhat flattened, striate longitudinally, two-edged (the
edges spinulous), decayed and b r i t t l e at the summit (not fibrous or fllamentose); tho
axial portions between two partial inflorescences elongate, subcylindraceous or slightly
flattened more or less armed on the outer side w i t h solitary or 3-nate claws ; partial
