long, straight spines. Leaves short with only 2 pairs of leaflets which are approximate
t o the terminal pair; the basal pair transformed iuto two opposite, long, acicular
spincd. Fe^nale spadix shorter <han the leaves.—Perhaps a distinct species.

naked canes Bometimes not more than 3 mm. in diani. Leaf-sheatJis smooth, or with
very few hooked prickles. Leaves very delicate, 2.5-40 cm. long; the petiole
very short. Leaflets 5-6 on each side, somewhat inequidistant, very narrowly lanceolate,
8-12 mm, long, 8—14 mm. broad, those of the terminal paii' very highly connate.
Male spadix filiform, very slender; partial inflorescences reduced to one spikelet.

33- G. corrugatus Becc.—SJieathed stem 4-5 mm. in diam. Leaf-sheaths not
prickly, but marked by many, approximate, pi'ominenfc and annular ridges. Leaves
30-35 cm. long; petiole very short. Leaflets very few, 5 on eacli side, perfectly
opposite and forming remote pairs, elliptic-lanceolatd, 3-co8tulate, 12-13 cm. long,
2'5 cm. broad; those of the terminal pair united to about the middle.

84. 0. papuanus Becc,—Very slender. Sheathed stem 6-8 mai. in diam. Leafsheaths
sprinkled with very small ascending, tuberculiform prickles. about
30 cm long); the petiole about 2 cm. long. Leaflets few, 6 - 7 on each side, clustered
in about 4 remote fascicles of 3-4 each, spreading, elliptic-lanceolate or broadly
oblacceolate, suddenly subulately acuminate, 5-costulate, quite naked on both surfaces
and at the margins, those of the terminal pair connate to about the middle.

35. C. filipendulus Bccc.—Sheathed stem 1-1'5 cm. in diam. Leaf-sheatlts armed
with short, or 5-10 mm. long or subtuberculiform, scattered or], slightly confluent
spines. Leaves 'o-1 m. long; the petiole short or long. -Zea/c^s"" v e i y ' f e w , j5-8 in
all, elongate oblong, 25-40 cm. long. 5-10 cm. broad, 5-9-costate, ' naked 'on both
sm-faces, those of the terminal paii- confluent by tlreir bases. Male and female spadiees
similar, simply decompound, filiform, very long (1-1'8 m.). Fmit small, about ¿12
mm. long, broadly conical-ovate.

36. C- gomspermus Becc.—Sheathed stem about 15 mm. in diam. Leaf-shcaths
• armed with straight, spreading spines. Leaves about 50 cm. long, the petiole
short. Leaflets very few, 6 in all, oblong or spathulate-oblong, 20-22 cm. long, 4-5-5'5
cm. broad, 5-costate, quite naked on both surfaces, those of the terminal pair
about as largo as the side ones, highly connatc. Female spadix with a comparatively
l i g id and stout asis and with abbreviate, densely flowered partial inflorescences. Fruit

20-23 mm. long, blackish, shining, globose, ventricose and conically acute. Seed
angular.

87. G. fioribundus Grifl,—Not very highly scandent. Sheathed stem 9.-2'5 cm.
in diam. or smaller. Leaf-sheaths densely armed with very unequal, short and long
subulate spines. Oerea densely bristly-iiisirid. Leaves comparatively short (-6-1 m.);
the petiole rather long and robust, ai-med with straight, often long spines; raclvis
irregularly armed with a few, strong and long, solitary, suddenly deflexed spines.

in groups of 2-3 on each side, narrowly lanceolate, 3.sub-5-C08tnlate, the co.sta2
(3 or 5) bristly spiimlous above, beneath the mid-costa and the side costaj occasionally
bristly, the two terminal leaflets larger than tlie others, highly connate. Male spadix
ultra-decompound, elongate. Female spadix simply decompound with few partial
inflorescences; primaiy spathes elongate, tubular, closely sheathing, often longitudinally
split and open in theii- terminal portion on the ventral side. Fiuiting perianth
explanate. Fruit subsphasric, 9-10 mm. in diam.

G. fioribundus var. depauperatus Becc.—Subscandent, small and delicate.
stem 5-6 mm. in diam. Ocrca densely hispid. Leaves small, with very few
( 6 - 8 in all); petiole and rachis armed only with very small scattered claws.
Assam: North-East India.
88. C. interruptus Becc.—Scandent. Sheathed stem 15-20 mm. in diam. Leafshcaths
gradually passing into the petiole, armed with a few strong, scattered, broadbased
15-20 mm, long, straight and .subulate spines. Leaves 1'5 m. long; the petiole
rather long, deeply channelled above. Leaflets about 15 on each side in 4-5 distant
fascicles of 2-3 on each side, narrowly lanccolate, 25-35 cm. long, 2'5-3 cm. broad
unicostate with 2-3 secondary nerves on each side of the mid-costa, smooth also
at the margins, those of the terminal pair somewhat shorter than the others and
rather highly comiate.

39. C. dioicus Lour.—Scandent, very slender. Sheathed stem 4-5 mm. in diam.
Leaf-sheaths hispid near the mouth, densely beset with very unequal, slender, straight
spines. Lravcs short, 25—40 cm. long; the petiole almost obsolete. Leaflets very
inequidistant, more or less distinctly grouped, 8-11 in all, of which 4 are much
approximate at the apex and 4 at the base, linear-lanceolate, 10-20 cm. long,
11-15 mm. broad, with 3 and sometimes 2 additional slender costce, all bristly
above, naked beneath; the two terminal leaflets free at the base. Female spadix very
sleuder, filiform. Fruiting perianth shortly but distinctly pedicelliform. Fruit globulai'
9 mm. long, 8-8'5 mm. broad, with a small cylindric beak.
