Leaflets few, large, rhomboidal with 9-12 radiate not spinulous costaj, not ansate and
almost symmetric at the base. Hals spadix simply decompound. Male flowers
cylindracoous, 8 mm. long, 2 mm. thick.

2 cm. in diam., cottony-tomentose, armed with broad-based very short ascendent
spines. Leaves relatively short and robust; petiole elongate, cylindraceous or obsoletely
angular-convex above; rachis white, tomentose (like the petiole), obsoletely bifaced
above. Leaflets large, about 25 cm. long, 10 em. broad, with 7-9 radiate naked
costie, not ansato and almost symmetric at the base.

18-20 cm. long, 8 cm. broad, witli o-7 radiate costce, of which 3-4 bristly above.
Male ipadix supradecompound, very long.

C. spectabilis var. sumatranus Becc.—Leaf-sheaths glabrescent, armed with numerous,
small, broadly-laminar, light spines. Leaflets oblong-obovate or ovate-subrhomhoid,
18-20 cm. long, 6 cm. broad, ^vith 5-7 cost®, of which 3-4 inconspicuously
remotely spinulous.

116. C. Bousigonii Tien-Q.—Sheathed stem 10-13 mm. in diam. Leaf-sheaths densely
with small straight spines. Leaves 75-85 cm. long; the petiole 15-20 cm.
long. Leaflets few, subovate-rhomboid, cuneately attenuate towards the base, quite
glabrous, about 15 cm. long, 6 cm. broad, with 5-7 radiately divergent and naked
cost«. Female spadix flagellifoi-m, about as loug as the leaves. Fruiting jmianih shortly
pedicelliform. Fruit broadly ovoid, very suddenly beaked, 18 mm. long, 14 mm. broad.
Scales^ in 18 series. Seed ovoid, superficially pitted.

117. C. heteracanthus Zipp.—Of moderate size. Leaves cirriferous. Leaflets not
numerous, 21-2.5 cm. long, 4-5-6 cm. broad, narrowly oblong or subspathulato,
distinctly concave-convex with 5 naked costze, gi-een, shining, very sharply and closely
transversely veined on both surfaces, paired on each side of the rachis, the pairs
alternate or opposite with long vacant spaces interposed; margins quite smooth. Male
spadix ultradecompound, elongate; secondary spathes membranous, tubular-infundibuliform,
loosely sheathing.

rachis strongly clawed at its simimit, but not prolonged beyond the diminutive leaflets.
Leaflets remotely inequidistant, not fascicled, elliptic-lanceolate or oblanceolate, discolorous,
or green above and light-yellowish subochraceous beneatii, with 6-7 slender quite
naked costa?, margins spinulous; the largest leaflets 28 cm. long, 5 cm. broad. Female
spadix rather large and elongate; female flowers stalked on an elongate involucrophorum.
Fruit sphicric, 1 cm. in diam. Scales in 2i series. Seed orbicular, somewhat compressed,
not pitted on the sui'face; albumen equable; embryo lateral

119. C. Cumingianus Becc.—Of moderate size. Leaflets 20-24 cm. long, 4-5-5-5
cm. broad, oblong-spatbulate, slightly concave-convex, opaque, slightly paler beneath
than above, clustered into alternate groups of 2-4 on each side of the racliis, not
very sharply transversely veined, plicate-many-costate, the mid-costa spinulous abovemargins
closely scrrate-spinulous. Female spadix idtradecompound; secondary spathes,
submembranous, loosely sheathing. Female flowers stalked on an elongate slender
involucrophorum.

120. C. uitiensis Becc.—Apparently rather slender. Leaves 1-1-2 m. lono-.
Leaflets concolorous, inequidistant, remote, not fascicled, narrowly lanceolate, 22-25 cm.
long, 35-36 mm. broad, 5-costate, the costas smooth on both surfaces and the margins
also smooth except at the summit. Female spadix not veiy long, with few partial
inflorescences; primary spathes cylindraceous, very sparingly prickly or even smoothsecondary
spathes short, cyatliiform, loosely sheathing; female flowers more or less
stalked by the involucrophorum. Fruiting perianth pedicelliform. Fruit globular, about
1 cm. in diam.
