T H E Protea umbellata has been cultivated in England fince the year 1 7 7 7 , at which time it was firfi
r a i t ed from feeds; received from the Cape of Good H o p e by MeiTrs. Lee and Kennedy, Hammerfmith,
at whofe nnrfery our figure was t a k e n in the month of Auguft 1800. It is a very hardy plant, and
not at all fubjeÉt to the very common fate of its c o n g e n e r s ; that is, to d a m p i n the leaves, or rot at
t h e root in w i n t e r ; is propagated by c u t t i n g s , t o b e made i n t h e m o n t h o f April or May, a n d treated as
directed for t h e o t h e r Proteas, T h e plant feldom grows h i g h e r t h a n three feet, and does not m a ke
many b r a n c h e s ; but is of a lively g r e e n colour, both leaves a n d item. We have, as ufual, adopted the
name this plant is g e n e r a l l y known by, it having been fo named by the younger Linuseus in his Suppl.
Plant. 1 1 8 , a n d by T h u n b e r g in his D i l l e r t a t i o de Protea, n. 34, and his Prodromus 2 6 . But why
or how a final!, clofe head of flowers may be denominated an umbel wc mufi confefs our ignorance
in this application of terms.
