BLOSSOM one-petalled, one-lipped ; tube cylindric,
longer than the cup, fplitting from
t h e lower fide half way; border one-lipped,
afcending, flattilh, four-cleft, the cltfu
n e a r l y equal.
C h i v e s . Threads four, of which the upper
pair is inferted i n t o the edge of t h e bloffom
under the throat, Handing o u t ; the lower
anterior pair is bent back to t h e fides. Tips
crelcent-fliaped, flattifli, appearing cut off
on the outfide.
P O I N T A L . Seed-bud very fmall. Shaft threadlhaped,
bent back through the filfure of
t h e blofibm. Summit fimple.
S E E D - V E S S E L , Capfule oblong, one-celled, twovalved.
SEEDS two, oblong, convex on one fide, threefurrowed
and flat on the other.

T H E Hebenflreitias may all be reckoned as r a t h e r biennial plants than perennial fhrubs- they muft be
i n e r e a i e d every year to keep up a fucceffion, which is a m a t t e r of no difficulty; as, if c u t t i n g s of anv
of the fpecies a r c put inlo feparate fmall pots, and kept from t h e air by a hand-glafs, for about a month
t h e y will become flowering plants by September, if the c u t t i n g s are made in May. Our prefent plant
was i n t r o d u c e d in 1 7 9 6 b y Meifrs. Lee and Kennedy, Hammerfmith, at whole nurfery the drawing
was made tins year in the m o n t h of M a r c h . They moftly flower in fpring, and autumn • the flowers
are very fragrant at n i g h t . They are natives of t h e Cape of Good Hope.
