T H I S moft b r i l l i a n t variety of Hypoxis ftellata, is as old a n i n h a b i t a n t of our gardens as t h e o t h e r Var.

r o o t s of t h i s p l a n t are r a t h e r more t e n d e r , or d e l i c a t e , t h a n thofe of t h e y e l l ow v a r i e t y ; which makes
i t fcarcer, and m u c h lefs k n o w n . The nurfery, H a m m e r f m i t h , is t h e only place at w h i c h we have
feen i t ; and, we believe, they have i t not in H o l l a n d . The root from which our figure was taken,
h a d been i m p o r t e d , from the C a p e , in 1 8 0 1 . It flowers in A p r i l , and increafes by t h e r o o t ; fhould
be p l a n t e d in very l i g h t fandy peat e a r t h , and removed from the pot foon after the flowers are
decayed.
