T H I S handfome Protea we owe to Mr. R. W i l l i a m s , of T u r n h a m - g r e e n , nurferyman, who raifed it by
feeds received from the Cape of Good Hope in t h e year 1 7 9 7 - It *s 0 l l e of the haiidfomeit we yet
poflefs of t h e winged-leaved k i n d of Proteas; of which divifion, in this l a r g e family, there are n ow in
t h e H i b b e r t i a n collection eighteen diiiinci fpecies. This plant grows t o t h e height of t h r e e feet, makes a
very b u i l iy head, and, w h e n in flower, has a handfome appearance; as t h e r e are fometimes twenty fpikes
of flowers on it at one time. It is propagated by c u t t i n g s , thrives in fandy loam, a n d flowers in J u n e ;
in w h i c h m o n t h this year, 1 8 0 2 , o u r d r a w i n g was made at Clapham.
