Protea with lance-thaped fmooth leaves; the
inner fcales of the empalcment are bearded,

T H I S fine variety of the Shewy Protea might, indeed, almoft pafs for a diflinct fpccies. It was introduced,
to B r i t a i n , in t h e year ¡704, by M r . Williams, Nurferyman, of T u r n h a i u Green. The only
l i v i ng fpecimen in Britain, we believe, of this plant, is at prcfent in the Hammerfmith colleaion. As
yet no i n c r e a t e has been produced from it, e i t h e r by c u t t i n g s , or feeds; for although the plant flowers
every year, and t h e feeds in t h e cone, or r a t h e r flower-cup, feem perfect, they never vegetate. It is a
hardy, and handfome growing Protea, requiring l i t t l e attention, and may be placed in any part of
t h e g r e e n - h o u f e ; grows about three feet high, very buihy, and flowers near t h e month of October.
