flowered in his Lordfliip's rich, and cxtenfive collection at Croome, Worcefterfliire, this prefent
F e b r u a r y , 1803, for the firft t i m e , in E n g l a n d ; his Lordfliip did us t h e favour to order the flower
t o b e c u t , a n d l e n t t o L o n d o n ; where it a r r i v e d , w i t h o u t t h e leaft i n j u r y , and c o n t i n u e d in perfection
m a n y days.
T h e magnificence of this fpecies of Protea, can be but poorly expreffed w i t h i n the l i m i t e d bounds
of our p u b l i c a t i o n ; we h a v e , n e v e r t h e l e f s , endeavoured t o d o i t all t h e j u f i i c e w i t h i n our grafp. A
confiderable p a r t of t h e luftre of t h e flower is loft, from t h e fmall portion of t h e leaves w h i c h could be
i n t r o d u c e d ; as t h e contrarted b e a u t y of t h e fine broad f h i n i n g leaves, w h i c h form, as it w e r e , a nidus,
or g r o u n d wood for t h e bloflom, c o n t r i b u t e , fo m u c h , to h e i g h t e n the b e a u t y of t h e whole.
T h e Protea cynaroides is a hardy greenhoufe plant, was introduced to Britain, in 1 7 Q 2 , by
McflVs. L e e a n d K e n n e d y , H a m m e r f m i t h , f r om t h e C a p e o f Good H o p e . May be increafed by c u t t i n g s,
t a k e n off the lower part of t h e p l a n t ; where they flioot out in clutters to t h e l e n g t h of an inch or
m o r e , a n d muii be t r e a t e d as has already been directed for Proteas in general. The p l a n t , even at the
Cape, feldom grows h i g h e r t h a n 18 i n c h e s , or two feet.
