T H I S fpecies of Pitcairnia was fent in t h e year 1 7 0 9 , from the ifland of St.Vincent, by Mr. Anderfon,
t o T . Evans, Efq. Stepney; at whofe gardens the plant has flowered, for the firft time, in England
t h i s year, in the month of April, and at which time our figure was taken. The Pitcairnias are all
natives of W e i l India Ifiands, and Hand, as the l i n k , between the Bromclia or P i n e a p p l e plant, and
t h e Tillandfia; to e i t h e r of w h i c h Genera t h e firft fight of t h e leaves, only, would configu them. Five
fpecies a r e n ow in Britain, a n d we do not doubt, but the fpecies a r e as numerous, as thofe of Tillandfia,
T h e cultivation of all the fpecies is perfectly eafy, as t h e y r e q u i r e no p a r t i c u l a r foil, or management,
if kept in the h o t - h o n f e ; where they g r ow l u x u r i a n t l y and t h r ow out, from the roots, abundance of
fuckers; which thould be t a k e n oif, to encourage the flowering of the central llioot.
