T H I S plant, a native of the Ifland of Cuba, was imported from thence, by Mr. J . Frafer, King"s
l l o a d , Cheliea, in the year 1 SOi. It is, unqueftionably, as handfome a plant as any at prefent cultivated
in our hot-houfes, and its c o n t i n u i n g t o produce frefh umbels of flowrrs, d u r i n g at leaft nine
mouths of t h e year, renders it, perhaps, t h e moft dcfirablc. It grows to the height of near three feet,
p r o d u c i n g but few branches. The leaves are extremely irregular in their form, and, when the plant
is in a fickly ftatc, the older ones are fubject to be flightly blotched, on t h e under fide. Few tropical
plants t h l t thrive w i t h lb liltle heat, or c a r e ; nevertbelcfs, we have not any hopes, of its ever becoming
3 proper fubject for the grccn-houfe; but as yet our experience on i b a t ' p o i n t will not permit us to
decide upon i t . It fhould be planted in a m i x t u r e of leaf mould, rotten dung, and l o a m ; and may
be propagated b y c u t t i n g s . From a plant at t h e Hammcrfmith nurferv, ripe feeds have lu-en procured
this year ; they have the exact appearance of the feeds of the I d l e r Palma Chrifti, but rather fmaller
in flzc and have the fame oily character. Indeed, t h e r e is lb little difference between fume fpeciesof the
Genus Ricinus, and Jatre.ph.-i, t h a t botanifts have been puzzled where to place them. Our drawing
was made from a plant in the collection of the Right Hon. the Marquis of Blandford, W h i t e Knights,
