T H E fpecies here figured of W h o r t l e b e r r y , according t o t h e K e w catalogue, was introduced, firft, from
N o r t h America, to us, by Mr. W i l l i am Y o u n g , in t h e year 1 / 7 0 . It is a hardy, deciduous fhrub;
grows to t h e height of t h r e e f e e t ; very bufhy, with the flowers but thinly fcattered over i t ; they are
white, 3nd deeply cut in the border, which is r a t h e r inclined to fpread. It is increafed b y l a j - e r s;
t h e berries feldom ripening in England. A l i g h t , fandy peat foil, with a fmall portion of loam, is the
fitteft for its g r o w t h ; and it acquires a h i g h e r degree of beauty, when Iheltered from the fcorching rays
of t h e fun, in fummer. Our figure was t a k e n in J u n e , 1801, a t the nurfery of MeiTVs. Lee and Kennedy,
from a plant which had been imported in February, t h e fame year, from Pennfylvania, North
America.
