G. tectricibus supracaudalibus albis : axillaribus omninò albis.
This aberrant form of Ground-Thrush appears to have been first known from specimens brought
by Deppe to the Berlin Museum, where Lichtenstein bestowed on them the name of Turdus
pcecilopterus, which, however, seems never to have been published. In any case this name could
not have been accepted for the species, as there is already a Turdus pcecilopterus described by
Vigors (P. Z. S. 1831, p. 54) from the Himalayas. The species was fully described by Dr. Sclater
from examples procured by De Oca at Jalapa in the State of Vera Cruz.
The subsequent extension of our knowledge of the range of the species has been given in detail
by Messrs. Salvin and Godman in their ‘ Biologia Centrali-Americana ’ (Aves, i, p. 23); but since the
publication of that work much additional information respecting the distribution of G. pinicola has
been received, as can be easily recognized from the fine series of skins of the species presented to the
British Museum by Messrs. Salvin and Godman.
The following is a list of the specimens in the British Museum, which fully illustrate the range
of the species:—
