TURDUS BOCAGII [Cab.).
BOCAGE’S THRUSH.
Peliocichla locagii, Cab. J. f. 0 . 1882, p. 320.
Turdus pelios, var. locagii, Seebohm, Ibis, 1883, p. 166.
Turdus libonyanus (nec Smith), Schalow, J. f. O. 1886, pp. 412, 420.
Turdus locagii, Cab. J. f. O. 1886, p. 397 ; Matschie, J. f. O. 1887, pp. 135, 155.
T. similis T. pelio, sed saturatior: pectore et abdomine summo auraotiaco-fulvia distinguendas.
B ocage s T heush was described by Brofessor Cabauis from Angola. I have never seen a specimen
from this country, but one from Bukoba on the Victoria Nyanza was presented to Mr. Seebohm
by the Berlin Museum. Dr. Reichenow informs me that specimens collected in the Marungu.
district by the late Dr. Richard Bohm are true T. locagii and have been compared with the type.
Dr. Schalow and Dr. Matschie state that Bohm met with the species on the Lufuku River in
July and August, on the Lualaba in October, on the Lugoma Ridge in October and November,
and on the Lufua River in November (of. Schalow, J. f. O. 1886, p. 412; Matschie, J. f. O. 1887^
pp. 135, 155). Young birds were obtained on the Lualaba in November.
Dr. Reichenow assures me that examples procured by Dr. Stuhlmann at-Bukoba on the
Victoria Nyanza are identical with the type specimen from Angola; and the single individual from
Bukoba, in the Seebohm Collection, certainly has the orange colour spread over the whole, breast
and upper abdomen. Whether this orange tint is of specific value, or whether it is merely an
incidental character of winter plumage, a further series of specimens collected at all times of the
year alone can show. At present the evidence points to the existence of a race of T. pelios with
an orange-rufous breast and upper abdomen, ranging from Angola to the western Tanganyika district
and thence northwards to the Victoria Nyanza.
Adult male. Differs from T. saturatus in having the orange-rufous tint of the flanks extended
over the lower breast and upper abdomen, only the lower abdomen being white: “ bill reddish-
yellow ; feet light yellow ; claws light horn-brown; iris brown; bare space behind the eye yellow;
eyelids reddish-yellow” (JR. Bohm). Total length 8-5 inches, culmen 0-9, wing 4-75, tail ? y 'i,
tarsus 1*2.
The description is taken from a specimen obtained by Dr. Stuhlmann at Bukoba, and presented
to Mr. Seebohm by the Berlin Museum. Jp,. B S ]
