Fraser says that in Ecuador he found this Thrush a “ smart, active, upright hird, seen inpairs
about the meadow-lands.” At Riobamba it was “ common, hut very shy, found on the ground m
swampy places. The storpach of one hird contained maggots, insects, and a small tadpole.”
Adult male. General colour above uniform ashy-grey, slightly shaded with olive, the wmg-coverts
and quills sepia-brown, externally ashy like the hack, the secondaries broadly margined with ashy;
tail-feathers dark sepia-brown, externally ashy; lores ashy-fulvous; in front of the eye a dusky
spot; feathers below the eye and ear-coverts ashy-grey, with hair-like shaft-lmes of whitish; cheeks
dull white, spotted with dusky black; chin white; remainder of under surface duller ashy-grey,
with a slight olive tinge, especially on the flanks and sides of the body; the throat obscurely
streaked with triangular spots of dusky blackish; under tail-coverts s la t y - g r e y , with white fringes
aud narrow white shaft-streaks; under wing-coverts and axillaries ochreous-buff, with ashy-grey
bases ; quills dusky below, light ashy on the inner webs. Total length 10 inches, culmen T05,
Wing 5*25, tail 4*2, tarsus 1*5.
The male described was procured by Mr. O. T. Baron at Cajamarca in July. A female from
Islay obtained by Whitely on the 10th of May seems to be still in winter plumage. It is olive-brown
above and below; only the abdomen being whitish. The stripes on the throat are very indistinct,
and there is no orange-buff on the axillaries, which are ashy-brown like the breast; “ bill bright
yellow; feet, toes, and claws bright yellow ; iris reddish hazel ” (H. Whitely), Total length
10 inches, culmen TO, wing 5T5, tail 3*8, tarsus 1*4.
