TURDUS SPODIOLiEMUS, Berl. $ Stolzm.
PERUVIAN WHITE-THROATED THRUSH.
Turdus phceopygus spodiolcemus, Berl. & Stolzm. P. Z. S. 1896, p. 326.
Ah adult male of this supposed race of 1 phceopygus was procured by H H Kalinowski at
La Gloria iu Central Peru, and was described by Count von Berlepsch and Mr. Stcdzmann as dmtoct
from that species, on the following characters The specimen differs from typical examples of
— ■ British Guiana in its somewhat larger size and by its more mmformly black
t t o a t t o colour extending also lower down. The blackish- feathers of the throat have only
a narrow whitish border, while iu the typical form these edges are broad and of a pure white
forming regular streaks. In the colour of the upper surface the Peruvian bird is almost identical
with that from Guiana, whilst the form which inhabits Eastern Ecuador, and is represented n
collections from Bogota, is recognizable on account of its dark brown or histae-brown colour
IT. phceopygus saturates, Berlepsch).” The specimen from La Gloria had the ins dark brown, the
bin blackish, the base of the lower mandible olive-yellow ; the feet t a w “ - , , ,
Of Turdus saturates I have already spoken under the heading of U rd u s phceopygus, and I have
no doubt that it is identical with that species. Of Turdus spodiolcemus I cannot speak wit
certainty, having never seen the specimen described; hut I feel sure that the colour: of the- upper
surface is a character of no importance in these Thrushes, depending o n season alone, and the
distinctness of the striping of the throat depends upon the wear and tear of the feathers
portion of the bird’s body, the white edgings becoming abraded in time.
