washed with ochreous-brown, especially on the forehead; lores blackish; sides of face slaty-black,
with hair-like whitish shaft-lines; sides of neck slaty-grey; cheeks and throat white, streaked with
triangular rows of black spots as far as the fore-neck, which is slightly washed with ashy-brown ;
under surface of body deep cinnamon-rufous, brighter on the flanks and slightly overshaded with
brown on the chest; centre of abdomen and under tail-coverts pure white, the latter with concealed
slaty-grey bases; thighs slaty-grey, edged with white; sides of lower flanks slaty-grey; under wing-
coverts and axillaries bright cinnamon-rufous; quills ashy below, pale rufous along the inner web.
Total length 9*5 inches, culmen 0'85, wing 5*3, tail 3'9, tarsus 1*2.
Adult female. Similar to the male, but paler and with the mantle more olivaceous and the
wing-coverts not so rufous; the under surface of the body much lighter and more of a rufous-
brown, with very little tinge of cinnamon. Total length 9 inches, culmen 0'9, wing 4*85, tail 3'75,
tarsus 1*3.
The specimens figured in the Plate are a male and female from Presidio in the Seebohm
Collection. I have described the adult male and female from Mexican specimens in the same
