With this Intention, lfe t out again from
England, in the Year 1722,. direâly for
Carolina; which Country, tho’ inhabited
by Englifh above an Age pail, and a
Country inferior to none m Fertility,, and
abounding, in Variety of the Bleflings of
Natqra; yet it’s. 'Produdions being very
little known except what barely related
to Commerce, fuch as Rice,. Pitch, and

Accordingly, I arrived in Carolina 23d. of
May 1722, after, a pleafant tho’ not aihort
Paliagè.: In. our Voyage we were frequently
entertain’d with Diverlions not uncommon
yin crofling the Atlantick Ocean, as catching’
of Sharks, ftrikeing of Porpufes, . Dolphins
Bonétoes, Albicores and other Filh ; which
three lall: we regaled on when Fortune
favoured us in catching them ; and even the

efcape their Enemies in the Water, but they
are caught in the Air by-voracious Birds.
But what feem’d moil remarkable of this
Kind, that in the Latitude of %§
Degrees:;North, about the Midway between
the two Continents of Africa and America,
which I think cannot be lefs than

our Ship; thefe Birds have ihort Wings,
and have been obferved not to be capable of
long Flights, it being a common Diverfipn
for Bovs to run them down after thefecond
or third Flight This Owl after fome Attempts
to reft, difappear’d; and the fame
Day being the 2 2d. of March, . an Han k
with a white Head, Breaft, and Belly, appear’d
in like Manner, and the Day after
fome Swallows appear’d, but none ventur’d
to alight on any Part of the Ship. No Birds
feem more able to continue long on their
Wings, than Hawks and Swdlovflf but
that an Owl lhould be able to hold out fo
long a Flight, is to me moft furprifing.
