H I S Bird agrees with the defcfip-
tion of that in Mr. IViUoughby, p. 107.
of the fame name, except that this is
fomewhat lets. They are very numerous
in Virginia and Carolina, and
are called there Eafl India Bats*. In the evening they
appear moil, and efpecially in cloudy weather: before
rain, the air is full of them, purfuing arid dodging
after Flies and Beetles. Their Note is only a
fcreep; but by their precipitating and fwiftly mounting
again to recover themièlVes from .the ground,
they make a hollow and iurprizing noife ; which to
Strangers is very obfervable, efpecially at dufk o f
the evening, when the caufe is not to be feen. This,
noife is like that made by the wind blowing into, a
hollow veffel ; wherefore I conceive it isvocc*afìón’d
by their wide mouth forcibly oppofihg'-tlrè air,
when they fwiftly purfue and catch their.prey, which,
are Flies,-Beetles, Ite.
They ufually lay two eggs, like-in fhape, fize',
and colour to thole of Lapwings, and on the bare-
ground:

there feemed to be the feet of the Grillotalpa, but fo

The Grillotalpa is found both in 'Virginia and Ca-'
rolina, in the like marfhy grounds iiin E n g la n d y
and feenas not to differ from ours.

\grand nombre de ces oi/eaux dans la
Virginie à? dans la Caroline, on
les y appelle Chauve-fouris des Indes Orientales. I.s
paroiffent plus fréquemment vers le fo ir, & fur tout
dans un tems couvert : avant la pluye Tair en e(l rem-
p li’, ce/l alors qu’ils gùêtent qu’ils pourfuivent les
Mouches & 1 les Efcar bots. Leur chant rie/l autre chofç
qu’un cri. En defcendant & en Je relevant de terre
avec vite/fe, ils font un bruit furprenant, ce que les
étrangers peuvent fort bien remarquer, fur tout fu r
la brune, fans en voir la caufe. Ce bruit e(l femblable
à celui que fait le vent qui'fozlfie dans un vaiffeau
creux', ce qü i m e fait-croire que cela fe fait par l’air
qui donne avec force dans leur go fier ouvert lors
qu’ils fçmt à la. pourfuite des Mouches, des Efcar-
botSj&c.
. Ils pondent ordinairement des oeufs parfaitement
femblàbles à ceux des vaneaux, & ils les pondent par

plus probable ce/l que Vun & l ’autre font des animaux
nodurne s. Ils difparoiffent pendant l ’hiver. -
’ On 'trouve les Grillotalpæ en Virginie en Caroline
dans les marais de même qu’en Angleterre, &
il'paroît qu’ils ne différent pas des nôtres.
