The P R E F A C E.
H E early Inclination I had to
fearch after Plants, and other
Productions in Nature, being
much fuppreffed by my relid-
ing too remote from London,
the Center of all ScienCfeil was .deprived of
all Opportunities and Examples to excite
me to a ftronger Purfuit after thofe Things
to which I was naturally bent: yet- my
Curlffity' was fuch, that not being content
with contemplating the Products of our own
Country, I foon imbibed-a paflionate Deiire
of viewibsf as well the Animal as Vegetable
Production!! in their‘ ;fNative' Council-’ .*,
which were. Strangers to England. Virginia
was the Place- .(I having; Relations
there ):.fuited moil with my Convenience
to go to, where. I . arriv’d the ¿|d. of

profecutiog a Defign of the Nature of this
Work, that in the Seven Years I reiided
in that Country, (I am aihamed to own it).
1 chiefly gratified my Inclination in obferv-
ing and admiring the various Produilions
of thofe Countries,. — • only fending from
thence fome dried Specimens of Plants and
fome of themoft Specious of them in Tubs
of Earth, at the Requeit of fome curious
Friends, among!! whom was Mr. Dale of
Braintree in Effex, a skilful Apothecary
and Botanifl; to him, beiides Specimens of
Plants, I fent fome few Obfervations on the
Country, which he communicated to the
late William Sherard, L. L.D. one of the
moil celebrated Botanifts of this Age, who
favoured me with his Friendlhip on my
Return to England in .the Ye:ar 17 19 s

toutes les Sciences ; J'étois primé par là
des occafions à f des exemples qui auraient
pu n i exciter à fuivre mon panchant avec
plus d’ardeur. Cependant il et oit tel que
l ’etude & la contemplation des produBions
de la Nature, que /’Angleterre me fournif-
foit, ne fatisfaifant point ma curiofitê, je
conçus une envie paffionnée daller voir
dans leurs propres climats les plantes &
les animaux qui etoient étrangers à ma
patrie. L a Virginie étoit le Pais où je
pouvois aller le plus commodément, à caufe
de quelques Parens que j ’yavois: J ’y arrimai
le ri f d Avril 1712. J e fongeois f i
peu dans ce tems là à entreprendre un Ouvrage
tel que 'celui que je donne au Public,
que pefidant les fept années que je
reftai dans ce pais, j ’avoüe à ma honte
que je ne m'occupai qu’à en obferver &
admirer les produBions, fans autre intention
que de fatisfaire mon goût ; feulement
j ’envoyois des plantes dejfêchées,. quelques
unes des plus belles dans des pots,
à quelques curieux de mes amis qui m’en
avoient prié. Mr. Dale de Braintree en la
Province d’EfiTex, habile Ap°tiquaire
Botanijle, étoit de ce nombre, mais outre
des plantes dejféchées je lui envoyai quelques
obfervations fu r le pats. I l les communiqua
à fêu Mr. Guillaume Sherard,
un des plus fameux Botanijles de ce Siècle,
& qui me fit Fhonneur de me recevoir
au nombre de fes Amis, lorfque je fus de
retour en Angleterre en 17 19. Ce fut par
fon avis que je r.éfolus de commencer
cette entreprife très conforme à mon incli»
