the upper Mandible is cover’d
with a yellow Sear: the Iris of
the Eye yellow; the Head lead-colour, with
a large red fpot on its Crown: round the
back of his head, are ieven black fpots regularly
placed: the Throat and Cheeks are
white, with a tindkure of red; the Back red,
and marked with tranfverfe black lines : the
Quill-feathers of the Wing dark-brown: the
reft of the Wing blue, marked, »as on the
Back, with black: the Tail red, except an
inch of the end, which is black; the Breaft
an4 Belly of a blueiih red; the. Legs, and
feet yellow.
HE Hen differs from the Cock, as follows
: her whole Wing and Back is

of the fame colour as the Back of the Cock;
the Tail of the Hen is marked, as on the
Back, with tranfverfe black lines; her Breaft
has not that ftain of red as in the Cock.
They abide all the year in Virginia and
Carolina, preying not only on fmall birds,
but Mice, Lizards, Beetles, tfc.

poucé âuboùt près, qui efi noir; la poitrine
è f le ventre,font d ’un rouge éclatant ; les
jambes & les piés font jaunes.
LA différence qu’il y a entre le mâle fif
la femelle, c’efi que la femelle a toute
l ’aile & le dos de la même couleur que le
dos du mâle : la queüe de la femelle efi
marquée de rayes noires en travers de même
que.le dos, &.elte~ n’a pas à la poitrine
cette' tache rouge que l ’on voit à celle du
mâle. Ils demeurent toute Fannée dans la
Virginie & dans la Caroline, faifant leur
proye non feulement de petits oifeaux,
mais encore de Souris, de Lézards, d ’E -
Jcarbots, &c.
