' T ' H I S is a large T re e ; the Bark remarkably red and fmooth.
■ The. Leives' are pennate; the middle rib five or fix inches
long, with the Pinna fet oppofite to one another, on foot-ttalks
half an inch long. The-Blofioms (whifch I did not fee) are fuc-
ceeded by purple-coloured Berries bigger than large Peas, hanging
in clutters on a ftalk of about five inches long, to which each
Berry is joined by a Foot-ftalk o f an inch' long. The Seed is hard,
white, and of a triangular figure, inclofed within a thin capfula’
which divides in three parts, anddifcharges the Seed: This Tree
produces a large quantity o f Gum, of .a brown colour, and o f the
Confiftence o f Turpentine. I t is efteemed a good Vulnerary,
and is much ufed for Horfes- Mott o f the Bahama Iilands
abound with thefe Trees.
