Of Serpents very few I believe have e-
fcaped me, for "upon Ihewingmy Deligns of
them to feveral of the moft intelligent Per-
fons, many of them confefs’d not to have feen
them all, and none of them pretended to have
feen any other kinds.' ,
Of Fifh I have defcribed not above Five
or Six from Carolina, deferring that Work
till myArrival at XhzBahama Iilands; which
as they afford but few Quadrupeds and Birds,
I bad more Time to defcribe the Fifties, and
tho’ I had been often told they were very
remarkable, yet I was furprifed to find how
lavifhly Nature had adorn’d them with
Marks and Colours moil admirable.
As for Infects thefe Countries -abound in
numerous kinds, but I was not able to delineate
a greatNumber of them,for theReafons
already aflign’d : After my Continuance al-
moft three Years in Carolina and the adjacent
parts (which the Spaniards call Florida,
particularly that Province lately honour’d
with the name of Georgia) I went to
Providence, one of the Bahama Viands-, 'to
which Place I was invited by his Excellency
Charles Phinney, Efq; Governour of thofe
Iilands, and was entertain’d by him with
much Hofpitality andKindnefs: From thence
I vilited'mariy of the adjacent iilands, particularly
Ilathera, Andros, Abbacco and other
neighbouring Iilands; tho’ thefe rocky Iilands
produce many fine Plants, which I have here
defcribed; I had principally a Regard to the
Fifh, there being not any, or a very few of
them defcribed by any Author: Both in Carolina
and on thefe Iilands, I made fucceffive
Collections of dry’d Plants and Seeds, and
at thefe Iilands more particularly I collected
many Submarine productions, as Shells, Co-
rail lines-, Fruitices Marini, Sponges, Aftroitcs,
ifc . Thefe I imparted to my curious Friends,
more particularly (as I had the greateft Obligations)
to that great Naturallift and promoter
of Science Sir Hans Sloane, Bar'- to
whofe goodnefs I attribute much of the Suc-

peu d'Oifeaux i f dAnimaux à quatre

pour décrire les Poijfonfijquoy qu’on m’eut
prévenu fu r leur beauté finguliere, je ne
lajfai pas d’être furpris, en voyant avec
quelle profujion la nature les a ornés de
couleurs i f de taches, dont l ’Eclat mérite
la plus grande admiration.
L e Pals abonde en différentes efpéces
d ’InfeClesJes raifons que j ’ai deja rapor-
tées rd empêchèrent d en dejfiner un grand
nombre. Après ■ avoir été pendant près
de trois Ans à la Caroline, i f aux environs,
particulièrement dans cette Province
qu'on a honorée du nom de Georgia (que
les Efpagnols appellent la Floride), f allai
à la Providence, qui eB une des IJles Bahama,
j ’y avais été invité par f on Excellence
Mr. Charles Phinney, Governeur de

tint pendant tout mon Séjour avec beaucoup
de bonté. De la je vifitai plufieurs
des IJles voifines, en particulier Ilathera
Andràs,Abbaco, i f quelques autres des environs:
Quoique ces IJles pleines deRocheÆk
produifent plufieurs plantes très curieufes,
que j ’ai décrites icy, je m’attachai principalement
aux Poijfons, parce qu’il n’y
en a aucun, ou du ■ moins très peu qui
ayent été décrits par les Auteurs. A la
Caroline i f dans ces IJles je fis fuccejfive-
mentdes collections de Plantes dejféchéesif
de Semence s ,if fu r tout dans ces IJlesje ra-
maffai plufieurs productions de la Mer,
comme des Coquilles, des Coraux, des Ar-
briffaux marins, des Eponges,des Afiroites,

As I was not bred a Painter I hope fome
faults in Perfpe£tive,and otherNiceties,may
be more readily, excufed, for I humbly conceive
Plants, and other Things done in a Flat,
tho’ exact manner, may fervé the Purpofe of
Natural Hiftoíy,better in fomeMeafure than
in a mprgjlJlit and Painter like Way. In
deligning the Plants, I always did them while
frelh and juft gather’d: And the Animals,
particularly the Birds, I painted them while
alive.(except a very few) and gave them their
Geflures peculiar to every kind of Bird, and
where it would admit of, I have adapted the
Birds to thofe Plants on which they fed, or
have any Relation to. Filh which do not
retain their Colours when out of their Element,
I painted at different times, having
a fucceflion of them procur’d while the former
loft their Colours: I dont pretend to
have had this advantage in all, for fome kinds
I faw not plenty of, and of others I never faw
above one or two : Reptiles will live many
Months without Suftenance, fo that I had
no difficulty in Painting them while living.
At m y return from America, in the Y ear
17 25, I had the Satisfaction of having my
Labours approved of, and was honour’d with
the Advice of feveral of the above-mention’d
Gentlemen, moft skill’d in the Learning of
Nature,who were pleafed to think them worth
•Publifhing, but that the Expence of Graving
would make it too burthenfome an Undertaking,
this Opinion, from fuch good Judges*
difcouraged me from attemping it any further:
And I alter’d my Defign of going to
Paris or Amflerdam where I at firft pro-
pofed to have them done. At length by the
kind Advice and Inftrucftions of that inimitable
Painter Mr. Jofeph Goupy, I undertook
and was initiated in the way of Etching them
myfelf, which, tho’ I may not have done in
a Graver-like manner, chooling- rather to
omit their method of crofs-Hatching, and to
follow the humour of the Feathers,:*-which
is more laborious, and I hope has proved
more to the purpofe.
The Illuminating Natural Hiftory is fo
particularly Effential to the perfecft under-
ftanding of it, that I may aver a clearer Idea
may be conceiv’d from the Figures of Animals

A mon retour de F Amérique en l’année
17 2 6, j’eus la fatisfaClion de ■ voir mon
travail approuvé:, i f plufieurs de ceux
que j ’ai nommés cy-deffus, très verfés
dans l ’Hijloire naturelle, m’honorèrent de
leurs Avis, i f jugèrent que mon Ouvrage,
méritoit d ’être publié, f i la dêpenfe de
la gravure ne rendoit pas cette Éntre-
prifie trop difficile. Ce fientiment qui vernit
de f i bons Juges, me découragea de
rien entreprendre d’avantage,if je quittai
