Lhe Lark.

||pf| |||||| of the Head is mixt with
black and yellow feathers.
Through the Eyes runs a ftripe
of yellow. From the Angle of the Mouth
runs a black ftripe, inclining downward;
except which, the Throat and Neck are
yellow. The upper part of the Breaft is
covered with a Patch of black feathers,
in form of a Creicent. The remaining
part of the Breaft and Belly, of a brown
ftraw-colour. It has a long Heel. It
has a iingle Note, like that of our Sky-
Lark in Winter; at which time, and in
cold Weather only, they appear in Virginia
and Carolina. They come from the
North in great Flights, and return early
in the Spring. From their near refem-
blance to our Sky-Lark, I conceive they
mount up and fing as ours do; but they
appearing here only in Winter, I cannot
determine it. They frequent the Sand-
Hills upon the Sea-lhore of Carolina, and
there feed on theie Oats, which they find
fcattered on the Sands.

excepté une raye noire qui commence de
chaque côté au coin du bec, i f defcend
jufqu’au milieu du cou. L e haut de fa
poitrine ejl couvert de plumes noires, qui
forment un Croijfant. L e refte de fa poitrine
i f fon ventre font aune couleur
de paille foncée. E lle a un long éperon.
Son chant ne roule que fu r une Note comme
celui de notre Alloüette chantante en Hyver.
Ce n’eft que dans cette fa i f on i f lors quil
fa it grand froid, que ces O i f eaux fe montrent
à la Virginie i f à A? Caroline. Ils viennent
du Nard, par grandes volées, i f s’en
retournent de bonne heure auPrintems. f e
juge par la reffemblance qu'ils ont avec
notre Alloüette, qu'ils s’élèvent i f chantent
comme elle; mais comme ils ne paroijfent
qu’en Hyver, je ne faurois F affirmer pofiti-
vement. Ils fréquentent le s Lune s qui font
fu r les bords de la Mer de la Caroline;
i f ils fe nourriffient de F Avoine qu’ils
trouvent çà i f la dans les fables.

TH I S Plant I obierved growing no where but
on Sand-Hills; io near the Sea, that at high
Tides the Water flows to it. Its Height is ufually
four and five feet.
